The NRO first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2019\/10\/16\/planet-has-a-new-subscriber-for-its-satellite-imagery\/\">subscribed to Planet\u2019s imagery service<\/a> in 2019. Financial details of the subscription are not public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planet first began providing imagery to the intelligence community through a multiyear contract awarded by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in 2016. The NRO took over that arrangement in 2019, as part of NGA\u2019s effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2020\/07\/17\/how-the-intelligence-community-is-approaching-commercial-imagery\/\">transition responsibility for acquiring commercial satellite imagery<\/a> for the intelligence community to NRO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlanet is proud of its work to respond to the operational need for imagery on demand,\u201d Planet CEO and co-founder Robbie Schingler said in a statement. \u201cRepeated, daily imagery complements taskable systems and when leveraged together, compresses the time between event detection, threat identification and action \u2014 all in a manner that increases government resource efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes as the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/07\/07\/satellite-imagery-provider-planet-to-go-public\/\">prepares to go public<\/a> through a special purpose acquisition company, a transaction it valued at $2.8 billion. Planet operates a fleet of about 200 satellites on orbit, capturing more than 3 million images daily of the Earth\u2019s surface. The company is expected to go public by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the NRO subscription, Planet has secured other valuable contracts with the intelligence community. It was one of a handful of satellite imagery companies awarded study contracts in 2019 by NRO as the agency evaluated how commercial services could help it fulfill its mission. And in 2020, NGA added Planet\u2019s data to its unclassified imagery portal \u2014 the Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery system \u2014 that can be accessed by the federal government and more than 50 foreign partners. The company seems intent to grow its ties with the intelligence community, hiring<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2021\/04\/28\/former-nga-director-joins-satellite-imagery-company\/\"> former NGA Director Robert Cardillo<\/a> as chief strategist and chairman of the
