{"id":22764,"date":"2020-08-12T20:39:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T20:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/12\/griffin-joins-rocket-lab-board-following-pentagon-exit\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:56:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:56:28","slug":"griffin-joins-rocket-lab-board-following-pentagon-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2020\/08\/12\/griffin-joins-rocket-lab-board-following-pentagon-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Griffin joins Rocket Lab board following Pentagon exit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Just over a month after leaving the Pentagon, former Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Mike Griffin has joined the board of Rocket Lab, a small launch provider with increasing business with the U.S. government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRocket Lab has established itself as the leader in dedicated small satellite launch, and it\u2019s a privilege to be joining the board at an exciting time for the business as it continues to increase launch cadence and expand into satellite manufacturing and operations,\u201d Griffin said in a statement. \u201cSpace continues to be a highly contested domain crucial to our national security, and it\u2019s also a domain that presents significant commercial opportunity. The Rocket Lab team has a proven track record of executing on a clear vision to make space accessible to these diverse communities, and I look forward to supporting that vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the U.S. government has sought to leverage the growing small launch market in recent years, Rocket Lab has been there to pick up the contracts. The U.S. Air Force has awarded the company multiple launch contracts in recent years, and the U.S. Space Force is expected to launch a payload with the company in the coming months. At the same time, the National Reconnaissance Office launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/01\/23\/the-us-will-launch-its-next-spy-satellite-from-new-zealand\/\" target=_blank>first payload from New Zealand<\/a> on one of the company\u2019s Electron rockets earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the company recently saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/07\/31\/rocket-lab-identifies-anomaly-the-caused-failed-launch\/\" target=_blank>one of their launches fail to reach orbit<\/a>, resulting in the loss of all commercial payloads onboard, a subsequent investigation has cleared Rocket Lab to resume launch activities and both NRO and the Space and Missile Systems Center have said they plan to continue doing business with the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin\u2019s addition to the board certainly reflects the company\u2019s desire to continue pursuing national security small launch contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are honored to welcome Mike to Rocket Lab\u2019s board of directors,\u201d said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab\u2019s founder and chief executive. \u201cHe brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the civil, defense, and commercial space sectors that will be invaluable to our team as Rocket Lab continues to grow and meet the ever-evolving launch and space systems needs of the national security community and commercial sector alike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin has a long history in the space arena. In 2005 he became the 11th NASA Administrator, a position he held until his resignation in 2008. During his tenure he initiated development of the agency\u2019s first commercial cargo delivery service to orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently at head of R&amp;E for the Department of Defense, Griffin was heavily involved in rethinking how the Pentagon approached the space domain. Griffin oversaw the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/03\/13\/pentagon-officially-stands-up-space-development-agency-names-first-director\/\" target=_blank>Space Development Agency in 2019<\/a>, despite resistance from inside and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/08\/01\/is-the-space-development-agency-here-to-stay\/\" target=_blank>outside<\/a> of the Pentagon. Griffin was the agency\u2019s most high profile advocate, pushing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/12\/03\/space-development-agency-a-casualty-of-budget-gridlock\/\" target=_blank>funding for the nascent organization from Congress<\/a> and arguing that it should remain independent from the U.S. Air Force\u2019s traditional space acquisitions structure\u2014at least initially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the agency\u2019s first year and a half, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2019\/07\/24\/what-will-the-space-development-agency-really-do\/\" target=_blank>he helped articulate a unique identity for the SDA<\/a> in developing a new proliferated constellation in low Earth orbit, which will eventually be made up of hundreds of satellites. That National Defense Space Architecture is now expected to be a key component to two of DoD\u2019s most pressing issues: Hypersonic missile warning and Joint All Domain Command and Control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his tenure, Griffin was well known for his strong personality, which ruffled the feathers of both his colleagues at DoD and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Most notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/03\/13\/in-memo-air-force-head-hits-space-development-agency-as-not-ready-for-prime-time\/\" target=_blank>he clashed with former Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson<\/a> over the establishment of SDA, and the day before he announced his resignation the House Armed Services Committee recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/06\/22\/lawmakers-threaten-to-move-missile-defense-agency-as-frustrations-mount\/\" target=_blank>removing the Missile Defense Agency from under his control<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2020\/06\/23\/griffin-porter-resign-from-top-dod-tech-jobs\/\" target=_blank>announced his resignation June 23<\/a>, officially exiting the building July 10. He and his deputy, Lisa Porter\u2014who resigned at the same time\u2014have since opened up a new business together called Logiq Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2020\/07\/13\/michael-kratsios-white-house-cto-named-to-top-pentagon-tech-job\/\" target=_blank>announced as
