BANYUWANGI, Indonesia \u2014 Indonesia\u2019s military on Sunday officially said all 53 crew members <\/a>from a submarine that sank and broke apart last week are dead, and that search teams had located the vessel\u2019s wreckage on the ocean floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grim announcement comes a day after Indonesia said the submarine was considered sunk, not merely missing, but did not explicitly say whether the crew was dead. Officials had also said the KRI Nanggala 402\u2032s oxygen supply would have run out early Saturday, three days after the vessel went missing off the resort island of Bali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe received underwater pictures that are confirmed as the parts of the submarine, including its rear vertical rudder, anchors, outer pressure body, embossed dive rudder and other ship parts,\u201d military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told reporters in Bali on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith this authentic evidence, we can declare that KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk and all the crew members are dead,\u201d Tjahjanto said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An underwater robot equipped with cameras found the lost submarine lying in at least three pieces on the ocean floor at a depth of 838 meters (2,750 feet), said Adm. Yudo Margono, the navy\u2019s chief of staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s much deeper than the KRI Nanggala 402\u2032s collapse depth of 200 meters (655 feet), at which point water pressure would be greater than the hull could withstand, according to earlier navy statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margono said emergency survival suits that are normally kept in boxes were found floating underwater, apparently indicated the crew may have tried to put them on during the emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cause of the submarine\u2019s sinking remains uncertain. The navy had previously said an electrical failure could have left the submarine unable to execute emergency procedures to resurface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KRI Nanggala was conducting a torpedo-firing exercise in waters north of Bali when it was reported missing. The wreckage is located 1,500 meters to the south of the site where the submarine last dove Wednesday, Margono said. Photos of the debris were presented at the news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underwater robot deployed by Singaporean vessel MV Swift Rescue provided the images, while the Indonesian vessel KRI Rigel had scanned the area where the submarine was believed to have sunk using multibeam sonar and a magnetometer, Tjahjanto said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia\u2019s President Joko Widodo delivered his condolences in a televised address Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll Indonesians convey deep sorrow for this tragedy, especially to all of the families of the submarine\u2019s crew. They are the best sons of the nation, patriots guarding the sovereignty of the country,\u201d Widodo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An American reconnaissance plane, a P-8 Poseidon<\/a>, landed Saturday and had been set to join the search, along with 20 Indonesian ships, a sonar-equipped Australian warship and four Indonesian aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German-built diesel-powered KRI Nanggala 402 had been in service in Indonesia since 1981 and was carrying 49 crew members and three gunners as well as its commander, the Indonesian Defense Ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia, the world\u2019s largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands, has faced growing challenges to its maritime claims in recent years, including numerous incidents involving Chinese vessels near the Natuna islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesian naval officials have confirmed that the next step will be to look at how to recover the wreckage, acknowledging that any such attempt would be a delicate and difficult undertaking, although recovery operations have been successfully carried out from deeper and more hazardous waters before, such as the salvage of the wreckage of the Russian submarine Kursk, which sank in the Barents Sea following a torpedo explosion in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
