Ford will work after all"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology glitches plaguing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/07\/22\/after-years-of-doubt-a-ford-class-carrier-is-set-to-join-the-fleet\/\" target=_blank>aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford<\/a>, lead ship of the Navy\u2019s next generation of flattops, are getting fixed, officials told lawmakers during a Tuesday hearing on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination punch of good news at the Senate Armed Services&#8217; Seapower Subcommittee included testimony that the Navy has recorded significant cost savings during the building of the John F. Kennedy, the next Ford-class carrier, and is prepping to purchase two similar flattops in fiscal 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressed by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., on possible problems with the Ford\u2019s advanced weapons elevators, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/bio.asp?bioID=1032\" target=_blank>James F. Geurts<\/a> \u2014 assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition \u2014 predicted the Ford would leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/nns.huntingtoningalls.com\/\" target=_blank>Newport News Shipbuilding yard<\/a> with a working system for delivering ordnance to the flight deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would say of all of the technologies on the CVN 78, of which there were many we proved out on this lead ship, the weapons elevator is the last one that we need to get tied up and work our way through,\u201d Geurts said. \u201cWe are making progress to get through all the elevators during this availability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford has 11 weapons elevators and each must be built, tested and certified separately, Geurts explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first two of them have been produced \u2014 the first one has been through test and certification and the second one is about 94 percent through testing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pushed harder by Kaine on whether they would be fully operational, Geurts said the \u201ccurrent assessment is we\u2019ll get through all of the production and much of the testing\u201d but might face some lingering \u201ccertification issues.&#8221; He pledged to monitor the process \u201cvery closely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"820\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_2022.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_2022.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_2022.jpg.jpg?resize=300,205 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_2022.jpg.jpg?resize=768,525 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_2022.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,700 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Navy officials say that most of the bugs have been worked out with the Electro Magnetic Aircraft Launch System and other new technologies onboard the new aircraft carrier Gerald R. Faram\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/09\/29\/trump-again-bashes-emals-technology\/\" target=_blank>long been a source of disgruntlement<\/a> to President Donald J. Trump, who repeatedly has bashed the carrier\u2019s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, which is replacing traditional steam-powered catapults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Thanksgiving call to Capt. Pat Hannifin, the commanding officer of the Nimitz-class carrier Ronald Reagan while it was visiting Hong Kong, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oQmObklrXUU\" target=_blank>asked the skipper to compare his warship to the Ford<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me about the catapult,\u201d Trump said. \u201cOn Gerald Ford, they don\u2019t use steam, which is the first one that I\u2019ve ever heard of that doesn\u2019t use steam. And I know they have some difficulties, which I\u2019m not happy about, and they spent a lot of money. And I was just curious \u2014 the steam system is tried and true for many, many years, as long as we\u2019ve had aircraft carriers, how do you find steam versus what they\u2019re doing on the Gerald Ford, which is electronic and digital, if you can believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/05\/11\/navy-should-return-to-goddamned-steam-on-carrier-trump-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/trump-ohio-preview.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy should return to &#8216;goddamned steam&#8217; on carrier, Trump says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">President Trump says the Navy should abandon longstanding plans for electro-magnetic catapults for carrier aviation and return to the traditional steam-powered launch and recovery system.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hannifin told Trump that while the Nimitz class of carriers has depended on the reliable steam catapults for generations, EMALS \u201coffered some great benefits\u201d such as reducing stress on aircraft, but like any new system it required experts to \u201cwork through the bugs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike legacy steam catapults, EMALS was designed to vary the stroke of the launch based on the size and weight of the aircraft its hurling into the air. That\u2019s particularly important for launching relatively light aircraft like aerial drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initial software gremlins prevented the Ford from deploying combat-loaded aircraft but Navy officials believe a system update slated to be installed while the carrier is in the shipyard will fix them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Echoing Trump on Tuesday, subcommittee chairman Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., grilled Geurts on whether Congress will \u201cbe glad we with the EMALS and Advanced Arresting Gear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/10\/hail-and-farewell-carrier-ford-changes-command\/\" target=_blank>the 747 launches and recoveries at sea the Ford performed since it commissioned in 2017<\/a>, plus more than 24,000 launch and recovery cycles using the systems at the land-based site, Geurts was optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile there have been technical difficulties we\u2019ve had to work through, it really opens up our ability to operate a wider variety of aircraft from the deck, both manned and unmanned which I think is going to be critical to those effective carrier operations as we look to the future,\u201d Geurts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geurts also said there was \u201cgood progress\u201d on the Ford\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raytheon.com\/capabilities\/products\/dbr\" target=_blank>Dual Band Radar<\/a>, without &#8220;any major technical issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2017\/08\/03\/the-carrier-fords-first-flight-ops\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IL72KN675NC5NJFQPQELNW33CY.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The carrier Ford&#8217;s first flight ops<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Pilot of historic first says it &quot;felt different.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A leader of the Virginia delegation, Kaine was keen on whether the Navy will bundle a two-carrier deal for the future Enterprise and the unnamed CVN-81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are, as you know, in the \u201920 budget process right now so we have not made a final decision on that buy,\u201d Geurts said. \u201cI would expect that decision by sometime by the end of this calendar year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is negotiating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntingtoningalls.com\/\" target=_blank>Huntington Ingalls Industries<\/a> to deliver the best price for taxpayers and Geurts said he wanted to forge an order over the next month because \u201cif it were pushed out much further, the savings achievable would start to erode.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe think those savings will be better than the $2.5 billion number that I quoted at the last time we spoke,\u201d he told lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/07\/21\/no-urinals-on-the-new-navy-aircraft-carrier\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gerald-r-ford.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">No urinals on the new Navy aircraft carrier<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The carrier Gerald R. Ford will have strictly gender-neutral bathrooms&#8230; for better or worse.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the initial problems with the Ford, Geurts said that the lessons learned have added up to significant savings in time and money on the next carrier in the class, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/02\/27\/carrier-john-f-kennedys-structure-passes-70-percent-completion\/\" target=_blank>John F. Kennedy<\/a>, including so far shaving 16 percent off the new flattop\u2019s production labor hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we look towards CVN-79, we\u2019re seeing fairly drastic reduction in labor hours,\u201d Geurts said. \u201c[Huntington Ingalls] has proven that once we get the design nailed down their ability to be efficient in producing those.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The combination punch of good news at the Senate Armed Services&#8217; Seapower Subcommittee included testimony that the Navy has recorded significant cost savings during the building of the John F.
