{"id":22844,"date":"2022-03-10T14:44:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T14:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/10\/navy-stands-up-runway-encampment-on-massive-arctic-ice-sheet\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:24:08","slug":"navy-stands-up-runway-encampment-on-massive-arctic-ice-sheet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/frozen-pathways\/2022\/03\/10\/navy-stands-up-runway-encampment-on-massive-arctic-ice-sheet\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy stands up runway, encampment on massive Arctic ice sheet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has transformed a slab of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/09\/19\/welcome-to-the-arctic-degraded-radios-poor-satellite-geometry-and-sea-charts-dating-back-to-capt-cook\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic ice<\/a> into an airstrip that can support multiple daily flights, and a Navy encampment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2,500 ft. long runway and the encampment, which includes a command center, sleeping quarters, cafeteria, restrooms and internet, were set up as part of Ice Exercise 2022, or ICEX 2022, on a three-and-a-half-mile long sheet of ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The encampment, dubbed Ice Camp Queenfish after the first submarine to operate under ice, is the biennial exercise\u2019s forward operating base and can house up to 60 personnel. The exercise launched on March 4, and lasts three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough the ice camp and air strip are built in just a few days, it takes a tremendous amount of practice, planning and hard work by many highly trained people ahead of time to be successful,\u201d Rear Adm. Richard Seif, commander of the Navy\u2019s Undersea Warfighting Development Center in Groton, Connecticut and ranking officer at ICEX 2022, said in a Navy news release.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/08\/02\/arctic-will-become-contested-without-us-presence-and-partnerships-2nd-fleet-co-warns\/?fb_comment_id=4367380470022251_4367754319984866&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fyour-navy%22%2C%22from%22%3A395%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Arctic will become \u2018contested\u2019 without US presence and partnerships, 2nd Fleet CO warns<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy utilized \u201cmulti-year ice\u201d to set up the camp \u2014 or ice that has undergone at least one melt season and is roughly 2-4 meters thick \u2014 while the runway was established on \u201cfirst-year ice,\u201d which is up to 2 meters thick, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe multi-year ice is thicker and it ensures that the floe is stable enough to support the camp for the duration of the exercise, whereas that first-year ice is easier to groom for a runway \u2014 it\u2019s smoother and not as pocketed,\u201d Lt. Colleen Wilmington from the U.S. National Ice Center said in a Navy news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Marine Corps Capt. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/08\/04\/brrrrr-navy-to-conduct-small-boat-operations-in-the-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy\u2019s Arctic Submarine Laboratory<\/a> spearheaded the exercise\u2019s planning and execution, and includes personnel from the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel from the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and United Kingdom Royal Navy are also participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Arctic region can be unforgiving and challenging like no other place on Earth,\u201d Seif said in a news release. \u201cIt\u2019s also changing and becoming more active with maritime activity. ICEX 2022 provides the Navy an opportunity to increase capability and readiness in this unique environment, and to continue establishing best practices we can share with partners and allies who share
