{"id":22852,"date":"2017-09-18T15:25:56","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T15:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2017\/09\/18\/the-corpss-new-ammo-resupply-robot-will-lighten-the-load-for-marines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:35:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:35:02","slug":"the-corpss-new-ammo-resupply-robot-will-lighten-the-load-for-marines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/modern-day-marine\/2017\/09\/18\/the-corpss-new-ammo-resupply-robot-will-lighten-the-load-for-marines\/","title":{"rendered":"The Corps\u2019s new ammo-resupply robot will lighten the load for Marines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Marine Corps is developing an autonomous robot to help speed up MV-22 Osprey ammunition resupply missions, according to officials at Marine Corps Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Expeditionary Robotic Platform, or XR-P, as it is called, \u201ccan be used to speed up MV-22 supported re-supply missions in austere environments at unimproved landing zones,\u201d according to a MARCORSYSCOM official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is useful not only for ammunition resupply, but also for any general purpose cargo and possibly casualty evacuation,\u201d the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The XRP recently completed a successful trial phase in August, which consisted of loading 36 120mm mortar into and out of an MV-22 \u2014 mimicking real world operations, according to Bryan Freeman, the advanced technology integrator at Marine Corps Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis marked the first use of autonomous loading\/unloading of a live aircraft,\u201d Freeman said. \u201cThe system demonstrated waypoint following, obstacle avoidance, teleoperation, follow-me, and M327 Mortar towing all while holding 2,500 pounds of cargo,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1059\" height=\"572\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/X-RP-STE-MV-22-Mortar-Tow.PNG.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/X-RP-STE-MV-22-Mortar-Tow.PNG.png 1059w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/X-RP-STE-MV-22-Mortar-Tow.PNG.png?resize=300,162 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/X-RP-STE-MV-22-Mortar-Tow.PNG.png?resize=768,415 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/X-RP-STE-MV-22-Mortar-Tow.PNG.png?resize=1024,553 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1059px) 100vw, 1059px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The eXpeditionary Robotic Platform, or XR-P, tows ammunition during a testing evolution.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicle was able to drive on unimproved terrain, \u201ctraversing obstacles such as railroad ties, downed trees, ravines, and the like,\u201d Freeman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is also working on Joint Light Tactical Vehicle\u2013based unmanned HIMARS launcher, according to Freeman. The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, is a precision\u2013guided rocket artillery system, which has been widely used by U.S. forces against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis could be missiles (in the case of HIMARS), an auto-loading howitzer, or just general logistical supplies,\u201d Freeman told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis system is the first autonomous system to be certified by Naval Air Systems Command as cargo. It is also suitable for use with the CH-53 heavy-lift helicopters or any other Marine Corps cargo aircraft. However, the certifications for those still need to be completed,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MARCORSYSCOM will continue to work with the Marine Corps Warfighting
