{"id":22901,"date":"2019-05-14T20:22:51","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T20:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/14\/the-corps-is-working-on-an-advanced-reconnaissance-drone-that-will-be-launched-out-the-back-of-the-mv-22-osprey\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:37:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:37:23","slug":"the-corps-is-working-on-an-advanced-reconnaissance-drone-that-will-be-launched-out-the-back-of-the-mv-22-osprey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2019\/05\/14\/the-corps-is-working-on-an-advanced-reconnaissance-drone-that-will-be-launched-out-the-back-of-the-mv-22-osprey\/","title":{"rendered":"The Corps is working on an advanced reconnaissance drone that will be launched out the back of the MV-22 Osprey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, the Corps has sought ways to upgrade the capabilities of its tilt-rotor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/13\/marine-corps-doubles-mv22-ospreys-at-kaneohe-bay\/\" target=_blank>MV-22 Osprey<\/a>, as the lightly armed aircraft is a big target and is vulnerable to attack, especially when landing and extracting ground forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the Corps is looking at a drone that can be launched out of the back of an MV-22 Osprey to provide advanced reconnaissance of potential enemy threats to the aircraft, according officials at the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s called the Air-Launched Fast Autonomous Reconnaissance System, or AFARS, and according to details provided by the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab. Aaron Henson\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 6-foot-long drone can fly at an altitude of 25,000 feet and carry a payload of up to 4.4 pounds, potentially providing other kinetic strike capabilities or sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the latest effort by the Corps to bridge some key vulnerabilities of the MV-22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps was seeking to up-gun its tilt-rotor by creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/21\/marines-consider-forward-firing-rockets-for-the-mv-22-osprey-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\">gunship variant<\/a> that could provide escort capability. Forward-firing rockets were being considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, according to Naval Air Systems Command, the Corps abandoned its search for a new weapon systems in favor of upgrading the underbelly GAU-17, 7.62 mm mini-gun known as the Defensive Weapon System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous testing of the Defense Weapon System in 2015 highlighted some fields of fire limitations as a result of damage found on the fuselage of several test aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Corps\u2019 Osprey has an escort gap, the Marine Corps at times has partnered with Air Force A-10 Warthogs to address the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Colin B. Kennard, a spokesman for Marine Aircraft Group 24, previously told Marine Corps Times that the A-10 is the \u201cpreferred escort platform\u201d and that the aircraft is \u201ccommonly paired\u201d with the Osprey when conducting evacuations and extractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A-10 has escorted the Corps\u2019 Ospreys in support of anti-ISIS missions in Iraq and Syria, Kennard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/04\/this-is-why-air-force-a-10s-are-flying-escort-for-marine-ospreys-over-hawaii\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mv22a10.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is why Air Force A-10s are flying escort for Marine Ospreys over Hawaii<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A-10s are the preferred escort aircraft for the MV-22.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps also is amid plans to develop a large group five sea drone known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/19\/the-corps-future-high-tech-mux-drone-program-is-not-dead-heres-where-its-at\/\" target=_blank>MUX<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t expect to field the futuristic drone until around fiscal year 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is still in the early stages of development, and the fiscal year 2020 budget request is only seeking $21.6 million, according to Marine spokesman Capt. Christopher Harrison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That money will go toward \u201ctechnical concept maturation and experimentation for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/26\/check-out-the-massive-do-it-all-drone-that-marines-could-choose-as-their-wingman\/\" target=_blank> MUX<\/a>,&#8221; Harrison said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, Naval Air Systems Command posted two payload prize challenges on the government\u2019s business opportunities website for potential MUX industry competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BELL.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BELL.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BELL.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BELL.jpg.jpg?resize=768,402 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BELL.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,536 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Marine Corps is working with industry to help inform needs for its large drone. and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payloads for the MUX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winners of the two challenges could be awarded $700,000 for the winner, $200,000 for second place and $100,000 for third, according to the posting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AFARS system can\u2019t plug the Osprey escort gap, but it can provide detailed
