{"id":22985,"date":"2018-01-11T23:59:31","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T23:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/11\/textron-us-navy-are-loading-guns-and-missiles-on-their-unmanned-mine-hunting-boat\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:01:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:01:32","slug":"textron-us-navy-are-loading-guns-and-missiles-on-their-unmanned-mine-hunting-boat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2018\/01\/11\/textron-us-navy-are-loading-guns-and-missiles-on-their-unmanned-mine-hunting-boat\/","title":{"rendered":"Textron, US Navy are loading guns and missiles on their unmanned mine hunting boat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ARLINGTON, Va. \u2013 Textron is planning to load up on guns and missiles for its Common Unmanned Surface Vehicle, or CUSV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 39-foot CUSV, which is developed to perform mine sweeping and countermeasures for the mine warfare package on the littoral combat ship, is getting ready to be developed further with new lethal and non-lethal payloads, which could be anything from a missile to a remotely operated gun system, such as the FN Herstal\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tJkdFIstwU0\">Sea deFNder<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textron has signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with the Surface Warfare Development Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, to pursue the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been starting to work on \u2019Well, what else can you use this system for?\u2019 \u201d said Wayne Prender, Textron\u2019s senior vice president of control and surface systems. \u201cIt clearly has more capability, we designed it with flexible, common systems in place. And that\u2019s where we\u2019ll begin exploring with the U.S. Navy through this CRADA that we\u2019ve signed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement was first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2018\/01\/09\/u-s-navy-textron-weaponize-unmanned-craft-surface-warfare\" title=\"\" class=\"\">USNI News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CUSV is designed to launch from the littoral combat ship and operate within line-of-sight, though Textron says it can operate over the horizon as well with satellite communications links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of putting a gun or a missile on an unmanned vehicle like a CUSV is appealing \u2013 the Israelis use a similar system for port security \u2013 but it presents an array of engineering challenges, said Bryan Clark, a retired submariner and analyst with Center for Strategic and International Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem with remotely operated machine guns on a boat about the same size as a standard rigid-hulled inflatable boat is stability, he said.
