{"id":24156,"date":"2020-04-30T19:13:50","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T19:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/04\/30\/the-air-force-wants-to-develop-a-hypersonic-cruise-missile\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:03:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:03:28","slug":"the-air-force-wants-to-develop-a-hypersonic-cruise-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2020\/04\/30\/the-air-force-wants-to-develop-a-hypersonic-cruise-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"The US Air Force wants to develop a hypersonic cruise missile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force is seeking information from industry about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/22\/hypersonic-weapons-arent-fast-enough-to-avoid-coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>hypersonic cruise missile technology<\/a>, with the hopes of starting up a new prototyping program in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service issued a sources sought notification on April 27 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2020\/03\/02\/pentagon-launches-hypersonic-industrial-base-study\/\" target=_blank>asking companies to submit information <\/a>about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/the-americas\/2020\/04\/17\/russia-shows-willingness-to-include-new-nuke-hypersonic-weapon-in-arms-control-pact\/\" target=_blank> air-breathing conventional hypersonic cruise missiles <\/a>that could be launched from fighter jets and bombers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The responses will help the Air Force determine whether to begin funding a new program of record and figure out how quickly it will be able to field the new weapon, said Air Force acquisition executive Will Roper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the case of how fast we could go with the scramjet technology getting into cruise missile and missionizing it, I think we can go fast,\u201d he told reporters April 30. \u201cI don\u2019t know how fast \u2014 that\u2019s why we\u2019re reaching out to the street. But given how far scramjet technology has matured, I\u2019d expect that we\u2019ll be able to go pretty quickly on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the solicitation, the service would aim to conduct a preliminary design review in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021. The technologies offered should feature ramjet, scramjet or dual-mode propulsion \u2014 a major difference from the hypersonic weapons currently under development by the Defense Department, which are all boost glide missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple advantages to fielding air-breathing and boost glide hypersonic weapons, Roper said. Boost glide missiles fly just below space, above the \u201cthick atmosphere\u201d where scramjet missiles would fly. That allows scramjet missiles to take on certain missions and targets that boost-glide systems cannot engage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the world of competing technology, we can\u2019t afford to have any blind spots or cede any ground. So we\u2019re preparing to make sure we don\u2019t cede ground on scramjet technology and hypersonic cruise missiles as a whole,\u201d Roper said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will have greater flexibility with this as a whole. That\u2019s one reason we\u2019re interested in accelerating the technology. It\u2019s mature, it\u2019s ready. It will give our operators greater flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will also allow the Defense Department to diversify the number of companies that can produce hypersonic weapons, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the case of boost glide technology, a lot of our major programs in the department go to the same suppliers,\u201d in part because those companies have pioneered materials and components that have not been replicated throughout industry, Roper said. \u201cOne of the reasons I\u2019m excited about starting a hypersonic cruise missile program is that we will have different suppliers. It\u2019s a very different technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roper said the hypersonic cruise missile effort would involve inputs from the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, DARPA\u2019s Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept, or HAWC, effort could inform the new program. As part of the effort, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2019\/06\/18\/northrop-to-build-3d-printed-scramjet-engine-for-raytheon-hypersonic-weapon\/\" target=_blank>Raytheon-Northrop Grumman team<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2016\/03\/16\/lockheeds-marillyn-hewson-touts-breakthroughs-in-hypersonic-weapons\/\" target=_blank>Lockheed Martin-Aerojet Rocketdyne team<\/a> are building scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScramjet technology has come a long way. I have been exceptionally impressed by what new manufacturing techniques are enabling,\u201d Roper said. \u201cI entered this job thinking scramjet will probably be a step behind boost glide. I am delighted to say that I was wrong. Scramjet is much more mature and ready to go than I originally thought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force may be embarking on a new hypersonic weapons program just months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/federal-budget\/2020\/02\/10\/the-air-force-just-canceled-one-of-its-hypersonic-weapons-programs\/\" target=_blank>after canceling one of its two development efforts<\/a>, the Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon, or HCSW. Although HCSW showed promise and was on track for flight tests, the service killed it the fiscal 2021 budget rollout this February in favor of the Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both ARRW and HCSW are boost-glide weapons made by Lockheed, but the Air Force decided to pursue ARRW because it was more affordable and could be carried in larger
