{"id":24322,"date":"2021-01-19T19:33:51","date_gmt":"2021-01-19T19:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/19\/lebanese-military-to-receive-100-armored-vehicles-from-uk-to-secure-borders\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:07:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:07:52","slug":"lebanese-military-to-receive-100-armored-vehicles-from-uk-to-secure-borders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/01\/19\/lebanese-military-to-receive-100-armored-vehicles-from-uk-to-secure-borders\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese military to receive 100 armored vehicles from UK to secure borders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIRUT \u2014 A shipment of 100 armored patrol vehicles sailed from the U.K. on Tuesday as a donation from the British government to the Lebanese Armed Forces to secure the northern and eastern borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Land Rover RWMIK \u2014 or Revised Weapons Mounted Installation Kit \u2014 vehicle package is worth \u00a31.5 million (U.S. $2 million) and \u201cwill further reinforce the stability on the Lebanese border with Syria and help the LAF to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/outlook\/2021\/01\/11\/lebanese-air-force-chief-the-future-of-air-power-and-its-role-in-fighting-terrorism\/\" target=_blank>counter efforts by terrorists and smugglers<\/a> to cross into the country,\u201d according to the news release issued by the U.K. Embassy in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K. previously supported Lebanon\u2019s military by deploying four land border regiments, constructing more than 75 border towers, providing 350 Land Rovers, and training more than 11,000 LAF personnel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2020\/04\/01\/lebanon-must-act-against-hezbollah-to-retain-americas-military-aid\/\" target=_blank>to counter extremists<\/a> and smugglers seeking to infiltrating Lebanon from Syria, which has been a problem for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am delighted that the U.K. has been able to help with this donation. These vehicles will make a real difference to the work of the land border regiments, whose efforts make life safer for all communities in Lebanon,\u201d said Martin Longden, Britain\u2019s special envoy to Syria. \u201cIt\u2019s a great practical example of the friendship and collaboration between the armed forces of our two countries, and the U.K.\u2019s genuine commitment to a strong and stable Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lebanese expert and retired security forces brigadier Naji Mlaeb stressed the necessity of such vehicles to support the country\u2019s border security mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese vehicles will facilitate the transportation of armed forces in the rugged terrain of the borders, whether northern or eastern ones, where most roads between the towers are not even paved but are dirt roads opened by the Lebanese Army to move between towers,\u201d Mlaeb told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the borders with Syria are very long, there is an impossibility to monitor them through personnel or even mines to prevent sneaking or smuggling.
