{"id":24335,"date":"2021-12-07T15:03:06","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T15:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/07\/turkey-hints-at-potential-hurkus-aircraft-sale-to-azerbaijan\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:09:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:09:36","slug":"turkey-hints-at-potential-hurkus-aircraft-sale-to-azerbaijan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2021\/12\/07\/turkey-hints-at-potential-hurkus-aircraft-sale-to-azerbaijan\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey hints at potential Hurkus aircraft sale to Azerbaijan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story was updated Dec. 13, 2021, at 12:03 p.m. EST with information from Turkish Aerospace Industries.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 Turkey\u2019s Caucasus ally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/10\/15\/will-russian-arms-sales-survive-the-azeri-armenian-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\">Azerbaijan<\/a> will likely become the second foreign customer of the Hurkus, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2017\/05\/19\/turkey-to-buy-up-to-24-armed-trainer-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turkish-made basic trainer and light-attack aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ismail Demir, Turkey\u2019s chief procurement official and head of the Presidency of Defense Industries, said Dec. 4 that there is strong interest in the Hurkus in Azerbaijan. \u201cWe will soon see important developments [about exporting the aircraft to Azerbaijan],\u201d Demir said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a day before Demir\u2019s statement, a Hurkus underwent a flight test in Azerbaijan, according to Turkey\u2019s ambassador to Baku, Cahit Bagci. Azerbaijan\u2019s Air Force commander, Lt. Gen. Ramiz Tahirov, was present for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Niger became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2021\/11\/19\/niger-becomes-first-foreign-customer-of-turkeys-hurkus-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">first foreign customer of the Hurkus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey\u2019s Directorate of Communications had said Nov. 19 on its website that President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan spoke with his counterpart in Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, by phone about bilateral relations. \u201cPresident Erdo\u011fan stated that the TB2 drones, Hurkus aircraft, and armored vehicles that Niger would procure from Turkey would strengthen its military and security forces,\u201d according to the directorate\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One procurement source said the Azeri government is interested in acquiring Hurkus\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/09\/08\/turkey-develops-ai-based-simulator-for-light-fighter-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hurjet version<\/a>. The armed trainer Hurjet is a jet engine version of the turboprop Hurkus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2018\/02\/20\/turkey-to-replace-t-38-aircraft-with-locally-built-armed-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turkey\u2019s first indigenous basic trainer aircraft<\/a>. Turkish Aerospace Industries launched the Hurjet program in 2018, with a target of having the aircraft\u2019s maiden flight in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hurjet is to have a maximum speed of Mach 1.2 and can fly at a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet. The aircraft\u2019s design is for a maximum payload of 3,000 kilograms, including ammunition, radar technology and a camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TAI told Defense News in an email after press time that the Hurjet program is meant to replace aging Northrop Grumman T-38 Talon aircraft currently used by the Turkish Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hurkus-C, the armed variant of the base version Hurkus, features locally developed ammunition including CIRIT, TEBER, HGK and LGK. It can also use INS\/GPS-guided bombs, conventional bombs, non-guided rockets and machine guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The armed Hurkus also features armored body parts, a self-protection system, a data link, laser tacking, an electro-optical and infrared pod, an external fuel tank, and advanced avionics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a 1,500-kilogram payload that can be used through seven external hardpoints, the Hurkus-C can perform light-attack and armed reconnaissance missions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this
