That value is now updated in the story.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The British Defence Ministry has signed a \u00a3250 million (U.S. $347 million) deal with Team Tempest, a group of companies working on the country\u2019s future combat jet, to provide digital and physical infrastructure to develop the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ministry said the latest contract is part of the government\u2019s investment of more than \u00a32 billion on the project, which will be spread out over the next four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the contract signed between the government and BAE Systems \u2014 one of the four founding members of Team Tempest that also includes Leonardo UK, Rolls-Royce and MBDA UK \u2014 the Future Combat Air System program has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2021\/05\/25\/british-team-tempest-is-itching-to-enter-new-fighter-design-phase-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\">entered its concept and assessment phase<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defence Secretary Ben Wallace made the announcement Thursday at BAE Systems\u2019 Warton facility, calling the deal a \u201cmultimillion-pound investment that draws on the knowledge and skills of our U.K. industry experts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoosting our already world-leading air industry, the contract will sustain thousands of jobs across the U.K. and will ensure that the U.K. remains at the top table when it comes to combat air,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s lead for future combat air capabilities, Richard Berthon, called the FCAS effort \u201chugely important in ensuring the U.K. and its partners have the skills and technology we need to give us the battle-winning edge for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDeveloping the system allows us to drive a revolution in digital development and harness the power of open-systems architecture,\u201d Berthon added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy and Sweden are also involved with the sixth-generation fighter jet program, having signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.K. in 2020, with plans to share the workload on developing the aircraft. Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo said Thursday that the Tempest project will serve as \u201ca game changer\u201d for British and Italian technological innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And earlier this month, Wallace met with his Japanese counterpart, Nobuo Kishi, in Tokyo where they agreed to accelerate bilateral discussions on developing subsystems for the program, including for power and propulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Franco-German-Spanish effort to produce a future combat jet \u2014 also called the Future Combat Air System, or FCAS for short \u2014 is set to launch its research and development phase this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany\u2019s Air Force chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Ingo Gerhartz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2021\/07\/12\/will-the-fcas-and-tempest-jet-programs-merge-germanys-top-air-force-officer-hopes-so\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Defense News<\/a> this month that he hopes the two programs will merge so there is more interoperability between NATO allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt can be that we go on different tracks.
