{"id":24812,"date":"2020-09-21T15:33:51","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T15:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/09\/21\/army-gives-green-light-to-shape-vehicle-electrification-requirements\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:09:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:09:31","slug":"army-gives-green-light-to-shape-vehicle-electrification-requirements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/army-gives-green-light-to-shape-vehicle-electrification-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army gives green light to shape vehicle electrification requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. Army Futures Command has given the green light to the Maneuver Capabilities Development and Integration Directorate to develop a plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/2020\/03\/16\/us-army-ventures-down-path-to-electrify-the-brigade\/\" target=_blank>equip tactical and combat vehicles with electric power,<\/a> according to a Sept. 21 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The directorate will begin drafting a requirements document for Tactical and Combat Vehicle Electrification, and will host an industry day Oct. 20 to share its electrification initiatives with industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CALSTART, an organization that focuses on clean technology transportation, and the Ground Vehicles Systems Center will co-host the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electrification effort aims to decrease the Army\u2019s reliance on fossil fuels. \u201cThe requirement also aims to increase operational reach across all maneuver formations through electric propulsion, which offers a variety of operational and tactical benefits,\u201d a statement from the directorate read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese include the potential to double operational duration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/04\/03\/hydrogen-fuel-cell-technology-could-bring-stealth-to-army-vehicles\/\" target=_blank>implement silent mobility, increase silent watch<\/a>, and potentially reduce the Army\u2019s logistical burden by nearly half when fully implemented,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army launched an earnest effort into electrifying the brigade earlier this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Gen. Eric Wesley, then-director of the Futures and Concepts Center within Army Futures Command, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/video\/2020\/03\/17\/could-the-army-make-all-its-vehicles-electric-in-the-future-army-modernization-priorities\/\" target=_blank>told Defense News in March<\/a> that the effort is easier said than done, and doesn\u2019t just focus on powering a vehicle electrically. Instead, the service would attempt to identify how an entire enterprise meant for supporting electric vehicle fleets and other capabilities could work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: We\u2019re behind, we\u2019re late to meet on this thing,\u201d Wesley said. \u201cIf you look at all of the analysis, all of the various nations that we work with, they\u2019re all going to electric power with their automotive fleet. And right now, although we do [science and technology] and we\u2019ve got some research and development going on and we can build prototypes, in terms of a transition plan, we are not there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials know there will likely be a time where vehicles that use fossil fuels and ones that are all-electric share the battlefield. \u201cWhat is the distribution plan that enables that?\u201d Wesley wondered. \u201cThat is much more complex when you look at the implications for an entire enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wesley was preparing a proposal for the head of Army Futures Command on how the service might accomplish such an endeavor that could change the paradigm of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/05\/08\/army-crafting-strategy-to-reduce-logistics-tail\/\" target=_blank>logistics and sustainment tails<\/a> as well as enhance force mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal was intended to make a business case for the Army electrifying the formation, discuss the technical feasibility and describe a transition process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Maneuver Capabilities Development and Integration Directorate\u2019s requirements for the development process gives the overall
