{"id":25562,"date":"2022-07-01T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/07\/01\/us-navy-air-force-running-capstone-test-of-new-high-power-microwave-missile\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:00:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:00:55","slug":"us-navy-air-force-running-capstone-test-of-new-high-power-microwave-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/07\/01\/us-navy-air-force-running-capstone-test-of-new-high-power-microwave-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy, Air Force running \u2018capstone test\u2019 of new high-power microwave missile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. \u2014 The U.S. Navy and Air Force research laboratories are wrapping up a five-year joint effort to advance high-power microwave technology this summer with two months of testing in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The High-Powered Joint Electromagnetic Non-Kinetic Strike Weapon, known as HiJENKS, uses microwave technology to disable an adversary\u2019s electronic systems. The Air Force Research Laboratory and the Office of Naval Research are conducting the capstone tests at Naval Air Station China Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HiJENKS is the successor to the AFRL\u2019s Counter-electronics High-Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project, which completed testing a decade ago. Jeffry Heggemeier, chief of AFRL\u2019s high-power electromagnetics division, told reporters during a June 24 visit to the lab\u2019s Directed Energy Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico the program builds on CHAMP, taking advantage of new technology that allows for a smaller system equipped for a more rugged environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heggemeier said the program hasn\u2019t yet designated a platform for the weapon, but noted HiJENKS\u2019 smaller footprint means it could be integrated on a wider range of carrier systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll start looking at more service-specific applications once we\u2019ve done this test that demonstrates the technology,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFRL is also making progress on a more advanced version of its Tactical High Power Operational Responder (THOR), which uses HPM technology to disable drone swarms that pose a threat to military bases. The next-generation platform is named Mj\u00f6lnir as an homage to the mythical god Thor\u2019s hammer. AFRL awarded Leidos a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/02\/28\/killing-drones-with-thors-hammer-air-force-eyes-counter-uas-mjolnir-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\">$26 million contract in February<\/a> to develop the Mj\u00f6lnir prototype and deliver it in early 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adrian Lucero, THOR and Mj\u00f6lnir program manager, told reporters during the same June 24 briefing that counter-drone systems are becoming increasingly relevant as unmanned aerial vehicle technology advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are other effectors out there that are intended to go against drone systems like guns, nets and laser systems,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what Thor brings to the table is it has a larger range to affect and it has a decreased engagement time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The THOR prototype returned last month from a year of operational testing overseas. While the system was in use, the program team was hard at work developing the Mjolnir upgrades to extend THOR\u2019s range, increase its power by about 50% and improve its usability \u2014 recommendations from the Air Force Security Forces who were using it during the deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe learned a lot of lessons from it being overseas, just working in that operational environment, having Air Force Security Forces airmen pulling the trigger and breaking it,\u201d Heggemeier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucero and Heggemeier wouldn\u2019t disclose where THOR was deployed, but Lucero said the system proved 94% reliable during its operational assessment, demonstrating its ability \u201cin the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the prototype arrived back in New Mexico, the team disassembled and inspected it and then reassembled it for baseline testing to ensure it\u2019s working as designed.
