{"id":25891,"date":"2018-08-01T16:30:33","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T16:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/01\/spawar-inks-lucrative-contract\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:31:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:31:41","slug":"spawar-inks-lucrative-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/08\/01\/spawar-inks-lucrative-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"SPAWAR inks lucrative contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has pulled the trigger on the lucrative engineering services contract for afloat and ashore operations worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saic.com\/\" target=_blank>Science Applications International Corp<\/a>. a $116 million prime contract to continue providing a wide range of management and technical support to the Navy\u2019s Tactical Networks In-Service Engineering Activity \u2014 what sailors call \u201cTACNET ISEA&#8221; for short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bulk of the work is expected to be performed in San Diego and Norfolk, with some additional help on Navy vessels and shore sites around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract calls for a three-year base period of performance but includes a two-year option that, if exercised, will hike the value of the deal to about $196 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, SAIC landed a similar three-year $80 million deal with SPAWAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are proud to continue our support to SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific TACNET and are dedicated to ensuring the highest degree of fleet readiness. The Air Force helped to maintain TACNET terminals for all the services.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than $4.5 billion in annual revenues, Virginia-based SAIC is a global technical and engineering titan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Headquartered in San Diego, SPAWAR Pacific spearheads the Navy\u2019s research and development into<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/en\/Science-Technology\/Departments\/Code-31\" target=_blank> C4ISR<\/a> \u2014 command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance efforts, plus the newest cyber and space systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAIC began working on the TACNET program on March 25, 1996, according to a written statement emailed to Navy Times by Lauren A. Presti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new contract includes extensive work on the Navy\u2019s Consolidated Afloat Network and Enterprise Service \u2014 CANES, the service\u2019s next generation tactical network. The Pentagon hopes to have it installed in 190 ships, submarines and Maritime Operations Centers by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also involves maintaining essential networks, such as the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. AEGIS depends on CANES communicating with the Navy &#8216;s Automated Digital Network System and sharing information with other commands at sea and ashore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deckplates get email messages and can browse the internet at sea because SAIC keeps CANES, ADNS and other systems working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the fiscal year that ended last September, SAIC handled 756 CASREPs \u2014 Navy casualty reports that are filed when a system needs repaired \u2014 and finished 164 network upgrades in San Diego, Virginia, Italy, Bahrain and Japan. Another 130 upgrades are planned for 2019 and beyond, Presti said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a contract SAIC had held for more than two
