{"id":25900,"date":"2022-06-15T12:01:48","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T12:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/15\/marine-corps-orders-safety-standdown-for-all-aviation-units-2\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:58:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:58:28","slug":"marine-corps-orders-safety-standdown-for-all-aviation-units-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/06\/15\/marine-corps-orders-safety-standdown-for-all-aviation-units-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps orders safety standdown for all aviation units"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All Marine Aircraft Wing units will conduct a one-day safety standdown sometime between June 21 and July 1, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/3061609\/marine-aviation-safety-stand-down\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Administrative<\/a> message released Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps has had six Class-A mishaps since January 2022, resulting in nine fatalities and the destruction of four aircraft,\u201d read the message. \u201cNow is an appropriate time to take a day to conduct a Safety Stand-Down, review best practices, and focus on areas where we can improve in order to ensure our units remain capable, safe, and ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standdown will focus on reinforcing proper procedures, providing information and gathering feedback, according to the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standdowns during the listed window will be held to minimally impact previous operational commitments, according to the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 8, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2022\/06\/11\/5-marines-killed-in-california-osprey-crash-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">five Marines died<\/a> in an MV-22B Osprey crash in a remote training approximately 115 miles east of San Diego, California near Glamis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The members of Marine Medium Tiltrotor (VMM) Squadron 364, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, out of Camp Pendleton, California, were identified following family notifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lance Cpl. Evan A. Strickland, 19, of Valencia, New Mexico, tiltrotor crew chief.<\/li><li>Cpl. Nathan E. Carlson, 21, of Winnebago, Illinois, tiltrotor crew chief.<\/li><li>Cpl. Seth D. Rasmuson, 21, of Johnson, Wyoming, tiltrotor crew chief.<\/li><li>Capt. John J. Sax, 33, of Placer, California, an MV-22B pilot.<\/li><li>Capt. Nicholas P. Losapio, 31, of New Durham, New Hampshire, an MV-22B pilot.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June\u2019s Osprey crash followed a fatal crash of another tiltrotor aircraft near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/03\/20\/4-us-marines-killed-in-osprey-accident-in-norway-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norway on March 18<\/a>, which killed these four Marines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Capt. Ross A. Reynolds, 27, of Leominster, Massachusetts.<\/li><li>Capt. Matthew J. Tomkiewicz, 27, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.<\/li><li>Gunnery Sgt. James W. Speedy, 30, of Cambridge, Ohio.<\/li><li>Cpl. Jacob M. Moore, 24, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps\u2019 sister service held its own \u201csafety pause\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/06\/12\/naval-air-forces-to-hold-safety-pause-after-string-of-crashes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy Times<\/a> reported ahead of that safety pause that units would review risk management practices and train \u201con threat and error-management processes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn order to maintain the readiness of our force, we must ensure the safety of our people remains one of our top priorities,\u201d the command statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Navy MH-60S Seahawk assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 3 crashed near El Centro, California on June 16 during a routine training flight, injuring one of four crew members, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/06\/12\/naval-air-forces-to-hold-safety-pause-after-string-of-crashes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 3, F\/A-18E Super Hornet pilot Navy Lt. Richard Bullock, of Strike Fighter Squadron 113, died in a crash during training.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been six class-A Marine aviation mishaps resulting in
