{"id":26035,"date":"2022-01-03T01:50:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T01:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/01\/03\/new-in-2022-the-marines-need-the-f-35-but-its-future-is-complicated\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:04:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:04:28","slug":"new-in-2022-the-marines-need-the-f-35-but-its-future-is-complicated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/01\/03\/new-in-2022-the-marines-need-the-f-35-but-its-future-is-complicated\/","title":{"rendered":"New in 2022: The Marines need the F-35, but its future is complicated"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/11\/marine-f-35b-lands-on-japanese-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps<\/a> beat the Navy to having a deployment-ready <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/04\/01\/top-marine-signaling-to-industry-that-f-35-cuts-are-on-the-table\/\" target=\"_blank\">F35C Joint Strike Fighter<\/a> Squadron, the long-term future for the Corps\u2019 F-35 fleet is in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because a limited number of F-35 pilots in the ranks, along with more focus on increasing the unmanned aerial piece of Marine aviation pie, has spurred debate in recent years about the service\u2019s F-35 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July the Marine Corps hit its stride with a certified and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/23\/lightning-strike-grounds-2-f-35b-lightning-ii-jets\/\" target=\"_blank\">deployable F-35C<\/a>, or carrier variant, squadron. That honor went to the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA 314 out of Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/26\/marine-f-35cs-in-this-squadron-are-ready-for-combat-in-another-fighter-jet-first\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VMFA-314-F35C.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine F-35Cs in this squadron are ready for combat in another fighter jet first<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The squadron is slated for an aircraft carrier deployment in 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its deployment is expected in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cBlack Knights\u201d received F-35Cs in January 2020 and had them up with a ready force within 18 months, according to a Marine Corps statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as those crews were kicking tires and lighting fires, the overall pilot shortage in the F-35 space also was pushing higher command, including the top Marine Commandant Gen. David Berger to tell Congress it was willing to cut its F-35 order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berger remained a supporter of the capabilities the jet could bring to the future fight, but was realistic with Congress when testifying in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I\u2019m signaling to the industry, we have to be prepared to adjust as the operating environment adjusts,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now, the program of record stays the same, but we will \u2014 we must \u2014 adapt to the adversary and we must adapt to the operating environment that
