{"id":26065,"date":"2020-10-12T18:16:26","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T18:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/12\/marine-corps-creates-new-mos-for-mq-9-reaper-pilots\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:09:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:09:33","slug":"marine-corps-creates-new-mos-for-mq-9-reaper-pilots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2020\/10\/12\/marine-corps-creates-new-mos-for-mq-9-reaper-pilots\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps creates new MOS for MQ-9 Reaper pilots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has created a new military occupational specialty, or MOS: the 7318 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/12\/the-corps-seeks-reaper-drones-and-modernization-in-budget-request-but-will-only-add-100-marines-in-2020\/\" target=_blank>MQ-9 Reaper pilots<\/a>, according to an administrative message signed Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new MOS was created as the Corps looks to expand its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/20\/here-are-some-of-the-tactical-drones-the-corps-wants-in-2020\/\" target=_blank>unmanned capabilities<\/a> as it looks toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/09\/01\/what-war-with-china-could-look-like\/\" target=_blank>a war with China. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a \u2018stand-in\u2019 force of the future, the Marine Corps requires a family of (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2020\/09\/21\/did-the-us-marine-corps-give-up-on-a-big-ship-based-surveillance-drone-too-soon\/\" target=_blank>unmanned aerial systems capabilities,<\/a>\u201d the Marine Corps said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hqmc.marines.mil\/Portals\/142\/Docs\/CMC38%20Force%20Design%202030%20Report%20Phase%20I%20and%20II.pdf?ver=2020-03-26-121328-460\" target=_blank>Force Design 2030 document<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to transition from our current UAS platforms to capabilities that can operate from ship, from shore, and able to employ both collection and lethal payloads,\u201d the document said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/12\/the-corps-seeks-reaper-drones-and-modernization-in-budget-request-but-will-only-add-100-marines-in-2020\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Reaper.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Corps seeks Reaper drones in budget request, but will only add 100 Marines in 2020<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps plans to buy 3 hunter-killer Reaper drones. It will be a first for the Corps operating a group five drone.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new force design plans to add three new unmanned squadrons to the Marine Corps in the next ten years, according to the force design, with a focus on bigger and more capable unmanned systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently the Marine Corps unmanned aerial squadrons primarily operate the RQ-21 Blackjack, a group 3 unmanned aerial systems primarily focused on intelligence gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201c2030 force will operate Group 5 UAS. To achieve this future vision, an in stride transition is necessary to leverage current Group 3 operators until the future Group 5 community is created,\u201d the recent MARADMIN said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March pilots with Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron-1, also known as VMU-1, operated the group 5, MQ-9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2018\/06\/22\/the-corps-is-bringing-reapers-to-helmand\/\" target=_blank>Reaper in the Middle East<\/a> for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicle, owned by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. provided \u201ccrucial support\u201d conducting operations in the Middle East, according to a press release from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis achievement represents a unique milestone and example of the Marine Corps&#8217; legacy of innovation,\u201d David R. Alexander, president, GA-ASI said in a press release. \u201cAs a partner with the Marine Corps, we look forward to expanding the role of Medium-altitude, Long-endurance (MALE) UAS in support of maritime littoral missions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to creating a new MOS for Reaper pilots, the Corps is updating the 7315 unmanned aerial systems officer MOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 7315 MOS is now designated as the group 3 unmanned aerial systems officer and will focus on operating the smaller unmanned vehicles the Corps is currently using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has not yet responded to questions about how many Marines will be assigned to each MOS or how quickly Marines will be
