{"id":26493,"date":"2017-09-14T16:50:22","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T16:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2017\/09\/14\/bae-is-in-the-race-for-the-the-us-ffgx-with-its-type-26-frigate\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:12:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:12:36","slug":"bae-is-in-the-race-for-the-the-us-ffgx-with-its-type-26-frigate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/14\/bae-is-in-the-race-for-the-the-us-ffgx-with-its-type-26-frigate\/","title":{"rendered":"BAE joins race for new US frigate with its Type 26 vessel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LONDON \u2015&nbsp;BAE Systems is officially gunning for the U.S. Navy\u2019s new frigate program with its new Type 26 frigate now in production in the U.K.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Company officials confirmed Thursday it had responded to the U.S. Navy\u2019s request for information and were in talks with unspecified companies in the states about how it would build the ship for the FFG(X) program, according to a BAE official who spoke on background to discuss early developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn terms of the technical requirements, its a good fit. &#8230; We responded to the RFI and we\u2019re confident its a pretty good fit,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Type 26, designed primarily as an anti-submarine ship, is competing hard for both the Canadian and Australian frigate programs. Anti-submarine warfare is a key requirement for FFG(X), which BAE thinks gives its frigate an edge. The design also incorporates a large mission bay that can be used as flex space for mission modules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Type 26 is at the start of life, it\u2018s a new design and meets the new standards, and it\u2018s got adaptability built in,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ship\u2019s mast could be reconfigured to support Raytheon\u2019s Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar and will have enough power, space and cooling to support other requirements the Navy is looking to incorporate.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/breaking-news\/2017\/07\/10\/frigate-competition-wide-open-navy-specs-reveal-major-design-shift\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635684249329326951-lcs08-140805-01hjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Frigate competition wide open: Navy specs reveal major design shift<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Labeling the ship the FFG(X), the ship will be expected to keep up with the full carrier strike group and operate independently in high-end threat environments. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Type 26 incorporates or can adapt to virtually all the capabilities outlined in July\u2019s RFI, including 36 vertical launching system cells and Mark 41 VLS launchers, the ship might be too rich for the Navy\u2019s blood, according to Bryan Clark, an analyst with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments and a former aid to former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think they\u2018re leaning to something with a little less capability that will be a bit more economical,\u201d Clark said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The British Royal Navy recently inked a deal for the first three Type 26 frigates worth \u00a33.7 billion (U.S. $4.9 billion). That cost averages to just a little less than an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, though that\u2019s not a perfect metric because the costs would be different for a U.S. version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the Navy isn\u2019t looking to buy a ship that compete\u2019s for missions with the destroyer, said Rear Adm. The Navy&#039;s director of surface warfare sat down with Defense News to discuss what he wants out of a new small surface combatant.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want the ship to be so big that it competes with the destroyer. We want this to be part of the high-low mix,\u201d Boxall said. \u201cSo ensuring we get those capabilities at the best value is important.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the ship faces other headwinds as well, Clark said, because some of the competing designs already have ships they can show the Navy, whereas BAE Systems just cut steel for the first Type 26 this summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe problem they\u2018re facing is the rest of [their competitors] have ships that actually exist,\u201d Clark said. \u201cYou look at Fincantieri\u2018s FREMM, there are already hulls in the water you can point to.
