David \u201cAjax\u201d Berkland of the 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson called it \u201ca really significant day for us in terms of the buildup of Eielson Air Force Base.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base was selected in 2016 to host F-35s, spawning a base expansion that cost more than a half billion dollars and includes 36 new buildings and 54 housing units for the F-35s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webcenterfairbanks.com\/2022\/04\/16\/last-two-f-35s-land-eielson-air-force-base\/\">Fairbanks television station KTVF<\/a> reported Saturday, a day after the two final jets arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force says the fifth generation F-35 represents a \u201cquantum leap\u201d in air combat capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/10\/12\/eielson-reactivates-fighter-squadron-ahead-of-f-35s-arrival\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F-35-Eielson.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Eielson reactivates fighter squadron ahead of F-35\u2032s arrival<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Eielson Air Force Base has reactivated the 356th Fighter Squadron and named its new commander.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined with two squadrons of F-22s at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska will have more operational fifth generation assets than anywhere else in the world, Eleventh Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. David A. Krumm, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcemag.com\/eielson-days-away-from-achieving-full-complement-of-f-35s\/\">Air Force Magazine<\/a>. Krumm is the senior military official in Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGen. Billy Mitchell talked about it in the 1930\u2032s, that whoever holds Alaska, holds the world. So the strategic importance of competing and securing our nation\u2019s interests, which were there then, remains as much now as ever,\u201d Berkland told KTVF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion also includes personnel, with about 3,500 new active duty airmen and their dependents stationed at the base about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Fairbanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategic importance of these aircraft in the Arctic illustrates the Air Force\u2019s capability for readiness, and when it comes to training, you need an area as big as Alaska, Berkland said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are actually sitting inside the greatest air space in the world to train for fifth generation tactics against advanced threats, both on the air and on the ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the capability to fly more than 12 hours at a time, the
