{"id":27186,"date":"2018-02-06T19:27:15","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T19:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/06\/south-african-firm-ramping-up-mwari-light-attack-aircraft-production\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:15:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:15:55","slug":"south-african-firm-ramping-up-mwari-light-attack-aircraft-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/02\/06\/south-african-firm-ramping-up-mwari-light-attack-aircraft-production\/","title":{"rendered":"South African firm ramping up Mwari light-attack aircraft production"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Following the completion of the Paramount Group\u2019s new aerospace factory at the Wonderboom International Airport Complex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2016\/05\/23\/south-africas-paramount-group-poised-to-collaborate-with-us-defense-firms\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the major player in South Africa\u2019s defense industry<\/a> is preparing to ramp up production of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2016\/03\/07\/boeing-paramount-to-weaponize-s-african-recon-plane\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Mwari light-attack aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paramount\u2019s acquisition of high-end manufacturing technology and appointment of new employees means very little manufacturing will need to be outsourced, according to a news release. The company says this will improve efficiency by simplifying manufacturing logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This indigenous manufacturing capability is atypical for the company, which is known for pushing for production facilities in customer countries. For example, Paramount established factories in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2016\/05\/23\/south-africas-paramount-group-poised-to-collaborate-with-us-defense-firms\/\">Kazakhstan and Jordan<\/a> to produce heavily and lightly armored vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mwari is the result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2016\/03\/07\/boeing-paramount-to-weaponize-s-african-recon-plane\/\">partnership between Paramount and Boeing that was struck in 2016<\/a>. It combines Paramount\u2019s advanced, high-performance reconnaissance light aircraft with Boeing\u2019s mission systems and advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform carries an interchangeable multimission pod system, or IMPS, under the cockpit, which allows a single plane to perform multiple roles. We have not simply created an armed variant of a civilian crop-duster, but produced an aircraft designed for ISR and [close-air support] missions in every millimeter of its design,\u201d Ichikowitz said in a statement. \u201cIt is designed for purpose \u2014 specifically for the kind of remote, hybrid ISR and CAS missions that the world\u2019s air forces are increasingly being called upon to perform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, Ichikowitz hinted there was high interest for the Mwari from clients in the Middle East, the United States and some African
