{"id":27303,"date":"2020-10-13T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/13\/general-dynamics-rolls-out-new-trx-ground-robot-at-ausa\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:15:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:15:19","slug":"general-dynamics-rolls-out-new-trx-ground-robot-at-ausa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa-digital-show-dailies\/2020\/10\/13\/general-dynamics-rolls-out-new-trx-ground-robot-at-ausa\/","title":{"rendered":"General Dynamics rolls out new TRX ground robot at AUSA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 General Dynamics Land Systems debuted its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/laying-the-groundwork-us-army-unveils-rough-plan-to-formalize-robotic-combat-vehicles-effort\/\" target=_blank>medium-class robotic combat vehicle <\/a>\u2014 Tracked Robot 10-Ton, or TRX \u2014 at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference, which came together using AI-enhanced design and lightweight materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TRX is an independent research project that GDLS has been working for over year that builds on the technologies from its successful Small<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/10\/31\/heres-the-robotic-vehicle-that-will-carry-equipment-for-us-troops\/\" target=_blank> Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) robotic vehicle program<\/a>, a GDLS spokesperson told Defense News in an interview ahead of AUSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GDLS won the SMET competition this year after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/18\/after-protest-army-launches-new-competition-for-robotic-mule\/\" target=_blank>a recompete followed by a protest<\/a>. GDLS also won the original contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10-ton vehicle has a light chassis that can carry a lot by using some advanced design technologies that the company has developed with partners as well as some unique manufacturing technologies and advanced materials, according to GDLS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform is designed to meet a variety of critical missions such as direct and indirect fires, autonomous resupply, complex obstacle breaching, counter-unmanned aerial systems, electronic warfare and reconnaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The robot can conduct semi-autonomous operations and is fast enough to keep up with high-speed maneuver formations like the Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the Armored BCT, GDLS said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In GD\u2019s virtual exhibit booth at AUSA, the TRX represents an indirect fires configuration that showcases its partnership with drone-maker Aerovironment. The vehicle sports a large payload consisting of a variety of Switchblade loitering munitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/09\/general-dynamics-aerovironment-join-forces-to-give-combat-vehicles-their-own-drones\/\" target=_blank>GDLS and Aerovironment announced its partnership at AUSA<\/a>, revealing an armored reconnaissance vehicle for the Marine Corps competition with Switchblade and Shrike 2 unmanned aerial systems incorporated. The goal was to do something similar for the Army\u2019s Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GD is also providing footage of its combat robot paired with a manned vehicle at the platoon- or company-level at its virtual booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/11\/01\/three-teams-move-on-in-medium-sized-robotic-vehicle-prototype-competition\/\" target=_blank>did not select GDLS<\/a> to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-picks-winners-to-build-light-and-medium-robotic-combat-vehicles\/\" target=_blank>medium-class RCV prototypes<\/a> to be used to determine the feasibility of integrating unmanned vehicles into ground combat operations, the company is prepared for when the Army moves forward with a competition to acquire those types of robots once it has defined requirements through experimentation over the next several years, according to company officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is planning to make a decision on h<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/08\/07\/heavy-robotic-combat-vehicles-put-to-test-in-the-colorado-mountains\/\" target=_blank>ow to proceed with robots on the
