{"id":27632,"date":"2018-02-15T15:35:16","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T15:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/15\/airbus-reports-additional-16b-charge-in-a400m-aircraft-program\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:17:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:17:48","slug":"airbus-reports-additional-16b-charge-in-a400m-aircraft-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/02\/15\/airbus-reports-additional-16b-charge-in-a400m-aircraft-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbus reports additional $1.6B charge in A400M aircraft program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS \u2014 Airbus has reported a 2017 charge of \u20ac1.3 billion (U.S. $1.6 billion) on the A400M military airlifter and restated its expectation that further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/02\/07\/airbus-hopes-to-mitigate-fiscal-harm-in-a400m-program-row\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">heavy financial damage<\/a> was limited on the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That charge was based on a detailed review in the 2017 fourth quarter on changes of \u201cschedule, capabilities and retrofit\u201d on the A400M, Airbus said Thursday in a statement with 2017 financial results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That provision brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/01\/29\/nato-buyers-to-meet-with-airbus-over-billions-in-a400m-fines\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">total charges on the A400M to \u20ac8.5 billion<\/a>. The charges reflect the cost of late delivery, while Airbus seeks to fit tactical capabilities on the turboprop plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith a clear road map in place, Airbus\u2019 remaining exposure going forward is expected to be more limited,\u201d the company said, reiterating a statement made Feb. 7 on negotiations for a new schedule with OCCAR, the European defense agency, and the seven client nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe charge was actually less than feared,\u201d said Sash Tusa, an analyst with equity research firm Agency Partners, which had thought it could be as high as \u20ac2 billion. \u201cIf this now ring-fences the entire A400M issue, it\u2019s very good news indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parties have effectively agreed to a rescheduling of delivery; what remains to be settled is a timetable for fitting capabilities on the aircraft. \u201cIt is an unrealistic expectation to have 100 percent capability on Day One,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airbus delivered 19 A400M units last year, up from 17 in 2016. The company had slowed assembly in Seville, southern Spain, to avoid a buildup of completed aircraft on the tarmac, waiting for delivery to the clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That slowed delivery allowed time to fit \u201cmatured\u201d capabilities, as some clients preferred to wait for aircraft fitted with military equipment rather than take delivery on time and then send the plane back for retrofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also less prospect of a buildup of aircraft while Airbus sought export sales, which have been slower than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airbus also booked a charge of \u20ac117 million following settlement with German authorities on an inquiry into alleged corruption in the sale of the Eurofighter Typhoon to Austria. That charge included legal costs for investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total \u20ac1.3 billion charge included \u20ac1.1 billion booked in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;On A400M, we made progress on the industrial and capabilities front and agreed a re-baselining with government customers, which will significantly reduce the remaining program risks,&#8221; Airbus CEO Tom Enders said. &#8220;This is reflected in a substantial one-off charge.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airbus reported an 8 percent increase in adjusted 2017 operating profit of \u20ac4.6 billion on steady sales of \u20ac66.8 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airbus shares soared 10 percent on better-than-expected free cash flow of \u20ac3 billion, up from \u20ac1.4 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Feb. 7 declaration of intent on the A400M \u201crepresents an important step towards reaching a contractually binding agreement also mitigating the commercial exposure while satisfying customer needs with regard to capabilities and availability of the aircraft,\u201d Airbus said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clients are Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and
