{"id":27900,"date":"2022-03-21T17:19:10","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T17:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/21\/soldiers-integrate-air-defense-for-the-first-time-in-major-alaska-exericse\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:44:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:44:21","slug":"soldiers-integrate-air-defense-for-the-first-time-in-major-alaska-exericse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/frozen-pathways\/2022\/03\/21\/soldiers-integrate-air-defense-for-the-first-time-in-major-alaska-exericse\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldiers integrate air defense for the first time in major Alaska exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent biennial, large-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/09\/ctc-on-ice-army-holds-first-arctic-brigade-level-training-rotation\/\" target=\"_blank\">arctic <\/a>warfighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/416738\/arctic-edge-22-comes-close\" target=\"_blank\">exercise <\/a>in Alaska that puts soldiers, airmen and a mix of the other services to the test defending the far north saw its own first \u2013\u2014 air defense integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Northern Command \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/416738\/arctic-edge-22-comes-close\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic Edge 2022<\/a>\u2033 exercise, the largest joint exercise held in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/30\/a-new-cold-war-how-the-army-is-preparing-for-a-fight-in-the-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alaska<\/a>, pushed about 1,000 U.S. troops from a combination of more than 35 units from both the United States and Canada in land, air and sea maneuvers in frigid temperatures and harsh conditions in late February and early March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Times spoke with Maj. Stanton Jordan, with the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command\u2019s training and readiness authority, housed in the Army National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/09\/army-sketches-out-plan-for-an-arctic-brigade-combat-team\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6924631.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army sketches out plan for an Arctic brigade combat team<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The concept taking shape looks like an almost entirely self-sustaining Stryker brigade with more infantry, mobile, turreted mortars, as well as electronic warfare and cyber teams.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time at least in recent decades, commanders incorporated air defense and strike capabilities such as the AN\/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar, the MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile system and the AN\/TWQ-1 Avenger Short-range Air Defense or SHORAD system, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jordan\u2019s soldiers began planning and preparing for this event 18 months before it kicked off. LeVeille\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small things make a substantial difference when temperatures not only drop below zero but can hit -60 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThroughout this exercise, we\u2019ve learned to make sure we have the correct fuel for the systems, the correct additives so hoses don\u2019t freeze while rotating turrets,\u201d Jordan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, as many who\u2019ve trained, lived or fought in the Arctic can recall, everything takes more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to wait 30 minutes before bringing cold air into the system,\u201d Jordan said. That\u2019s to ensure that the cold won\u2019t affect electronics within the platform, halting operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The air defenders took two battalions\u2019 worth of SHORAD assets, such as Avengers and Sentinels. A single Patriot battalion and a brigade headquarters were brought to run it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where commanders can get a clear picture because it\u2019s within the brigade HQ that the systems \u201cfuse\u201d all operations together, Jordan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the assets isn\u2019t new. These systems have been around a long time and used in real-world operations for years. LeVeille\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of exercise provides a kind of \u201cstrategic asset,\u201d Jordan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For soldiers out there maneuvering in the frozen tundra, they know that the skies above are covered by a crew of an estimated 300 Army air defenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jordan\u2019s system operators are scanning the skies, relaying the radar picture so they can detect aircraft and threats by engaging them with either the Avenger or Patriot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Patriot fires a solid-fuel rocket that can reach 80,000 feet and ranges out to as far as 100 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Avenger also fires a solid-fuel rocket, the vehicle-mounted Stinger missile, which also comes in shoulder-fired variants. The missiles have about a 3-mile range and are mostly used for low-altitude, short-range air defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Arctic Edge exercise focused mostly on the cruise missile threat, Jordan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By definition, a cruise missile is a guided missile that can fly at a variety of speeds from subsonic, or below the speed of sound, to hypersonic, which is five times the speed of sound. Most larger cruise missile variants can carry nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Arctic Edge event worked in conjunction with the Army\u2019s Joint Multi Readiness Center, the Alaska Air National Guard\u2019s Arctic Eagle-Patriot, the Navy\u2019s Ice Exercise, NATO\u2019s Cold Response and NORAD\u2019s Operations Noble Defender, according to a DoD press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis really is a demonstration of how we can use all these different operations to weave together how we support our countries to protect our nations\u2019 interests and defend our homelands as well,\u201d said Air Force Lt. Gen. David Krumm, head of Alaskan Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krumm called the domain awareness piece of the exercise \u201ccritical\u201d for Arctic defense work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTechnologies are changing and access to the Arctic is increasing, so it is imperative that those who choose to come to the Arctic are abiding by international rules and norms,\u201d said Krumm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Curtis Wilbur, a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, provided command and control functions for the simulated air defense portion of the exercise, according to the DoD release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>*Correction: This article has been updated with the correct spelling of Maj.
