{"id":28202,"date":"2022-02-14T14:38:17","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T14:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/02\/14\/army-led-hackathon-awards-cash-to-autonomous-off-road-vehicle-developers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:21:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:21:57","slug":"army-led-hackathon-awards-cash-to-autonomous-off-road-vehicle-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2022\/02\/14\/army-led-hackathon-awards-cash-to-autonomous-off-road-vehicle-developers\/","title":{"rendered":"Army-led hackathon awards cash to autonomous off road vehicle developers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-driving cars are the buzzing news of the future of automobiles, but the Army has a bigger problem \u2013 getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/318644\/army-autonomous-vehicles-dedicated-88m-fallen-soldiers\" target=\"_blank\">tactical <\/a>vehicles to drive over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/383780\/versatile-autonomous-transport-vehicle-tested-us-army-yuma-proving-ground\" target=\"_blank\">rough <\/a>terrain autonomously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get after that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/140771\/coast-guard-deploys-autonomous-underwater-vehicle-arctic-science-mission\" target=\"_blank\">challenge <\/a>a Pentagon-driven \u201cinnovation network\u201d held a hackathon Thursday that laid out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/23\/two-army-brigade-combat-teams-will-get-to-test-an-autonomous-robot-vehicle-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">obstacles <\/a>to getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/10\/06\/robot-truck-convoys-the-armys-been-doing-that-for-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">autonomous <\/a>vehicles off-road and doled out cash prizes of $15,000 each to help solve the puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The innovation network included the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsin.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Security Innovation Network<\/a>, the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cto.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Research and Engineering<\/a> and the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/devcom\" target=\"_blank\">Combat Capabilities Development Command<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/10\/06\/robot-truck-convoys-the-armys-been-doing-that-for-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/trucks.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Robot truck convoys? The Army\u2019s been doing that for years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It&#039;s like a game of Pac-Man.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the civilian sector has its own hurdles to making driverless cars mainstream, Robert Sadowski, the chief roboticist with the Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center, noted some added pressures for soldiers. For instance, service members have to drive off-road and in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the problems are totally unique to the Department of Defense,\u201d Sadowski said. \u201cI don\u2019t see Ford or Chrysler or crews at Tesla even, solving those problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cOff the Beaten Path\u201d challenged entrepreneurs to pitch ideas advancing three autonomous vehicles capabilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To predict and detect obstacles such as rocks and trees while being able to assess if the vehicle can travel over the object.<\/li><li>To adjust positions while traveling in locations without access to GPS or while a GPS system is under threat.<\/li><li>To ensure a safe, long-lasting autonomous system that can efficiently complete its mission.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One big technical obstacle is the use of sensors. Civilian cars will use an array of sensors to spot hazards and deal with them. But sensors are not all one-way. They also emit, which is bad when soldiers are trying to remain undetected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot use many of the sensors,\u201d Sadowski said. \u201cIf I\u2019m emitting (Light Detection and Ranging) that means the bad guys can see me too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The virtual competition, including entrepreneur pitches, concluded Thursday. Three companies received the $15,000 awards to pursue their ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>MVision (AcuSens) \u2013 This University of Michigan team proposed an ultrasonic sensor for obstacle material analysis.<\/li><li>Ubicept \u2013 A combined academic and startup team including individuals from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Silicon Valley. Team Ubicept proposed a concept for a passive, all-condition navigation camera and a system for non-line-of-sight imaging.<\/li><li>ATVision \u2013 This University of Louisville team proposed an enhanced approach to autonomous driving in rugged terrain using a combination of adversarial attack detection, convolutional neural networks, deep learning and blockchain technology.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representatives from each of the military branches participated in the Army Research Lab-led Hackathon event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jean Charles, the lead technology advisor for the Air Force Research Laboratory, noted that the air service works enough problems in the air without having to deal with the ground. But eventually, all aircraft have to come down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom an Air Force perspective, we try really hard to stay away from the ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An earlier program that might yield data for ground vehicle autonomy is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrl.af.mil\/News\/Article\/2678754\/congressional-report-commends-afrl-for-life-saving-collision-avoidance-technolo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charles said that system, fielded in the F-16 back in 2014, has saved 10 aircraft and 11 pilots as of 2020 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond developing smarter software and finding good hardware solutions, a key component in future off-road autonomy has a deeply human dimension \u2013 trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Deji Coker, the autonomy portfolio manager for the Office of Naval Research, pointed to an easy-to-understand civilian analogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou would not use cruise control if you didn\u2019t trust it,\u201d Coker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trusted autonomy is one of a trio of focus areas the entities are working to improve. The other two are passive odometry and obstacle detection and assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passive odometry is getting autonomous vehicles to navigate the terrain without GPS. A big area for progress is finding ways to sense the environment without emitting signals. Developers also want to know if vehicles communicating with each other or with a human at another location might provide GPS-free navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obstacle detection and assessment is what it sounds like \u2013 spotting objects and figuring out what to do about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, the idea was obstacle avoidance, but that\u2019s not always possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon wants vehicle sensors to predict if an object will move when the vehicle exerts a force on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same system will need to gauge how difficult a variety of objects will be to handle, such as wire, fencing, and glass, officials said. They\u2019re looking at how well current sensors do with obstacle detection and what could improve that, including better algorithms to provide operators with
