{"id":28234,"date":"2018-08-20T19:13:50","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T19:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/20\/commence-jealousy-the-royal-navy-just-opened-a-pub-on-its-prized-new-carrier\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:44:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:44:12","slug":"commence-jealousy-the-royal-navy-just-opened-a-pub-on-its-prized-new-carrier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2018\/08\/20\/commence-jealousy-the-royal-navy-just-opened-a-pub-on-its-prized-new-carrier\/","title":{"rendered":"Commence jealousy \u2014 the Royal Navy just opened a pub on its prized new carrier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future flagship of the Royal Navy, the 65,000-ton aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, isn\u2019t scheduled to complete its first real deployment until 2021, but that hasn\u2019t kept the Brits from ensuring one morale-boosting element is installed and ready for duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new pub, known as the Queen\u2019s Head, was christened last week aboard the Queen Elizabeth and will be available to officers and senior enlisted during the ship\u2019s maiden transit of the Atlantic, a journey that began Aug. 18 and one that features two embarked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/03\/05\/f-35b-lands-aboard-amphib-for-first-indo-pacific-deployment-on-navy-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. F-35B Lightning II<\/a> aircraft from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/08\/17\/ncis-investigating-camera-use-under-females-desks-at-pax-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wiltshire-based Wadworth brewery, which created an ale specifically for the ship\u2019s December 2017 commissioning \u2014 a beverage appropriately named \u201cCarrier Ale\u201d \u2014 was instrumental in bringing the pub to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has been a long time in the planning, well before the carrier was commissioned last year,&#8221; brewery CEO Chris Welham said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wadworth.co.uk\/article\/news\/wadworth-helps-royal-navy-sailors-quench-their-thirst-on-board-hms-queen-elizabeth\/\" target=_blank>Wadworth press release<\/a>. &#8220;The Mess looks really great and will provide a relaxing environment along with some fine beer for the team on board when they have some downtime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>What\u2019s on the drink menu? <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wadworth brewery will be supplying a range of goods to the thirsty officers and senior enlisted onboard. Among those:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><b>6X Ale<\/b> \u2014 the 4.1 percent ABV beer described as \u201cthe jewel in Wadworth\u2019s crown&#8221; won gold at the recent World Beer Awards.<\/li><li><b>Swordfish Ale<\/b> \u2014 a blend of beer and an old Navy rum recipe combines for a flavor-packed, 5 percent ABV ale with a rum aroma.<\/li><li><b>Carrier Ale<\/b> \u2014 on the lighter side, a 3.6 percent ABV pale ale brewed specifically for the ship\u2019s commissioning.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"524\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dagawehaenrhe.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dagawehaenrhe.png.png 794w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dagawehaenrhe.png.png?resize=300,198 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dagawehaenrhe.png.png?resize=768,507 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The specially-brewed Carrier Ale will be available for purchase onboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth. (Wadworth)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wadworth will donate a portion of proceeds from every bottle of beer sold to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, the pub christening announcement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ceremony was attended by Wadworth and Royal Navy personnel, including the Queen Elizabeth\u2019s commanding officer, Capt.
