The agency is taking a spiral development approach, launching additional satellites with increasingly advanced capabilities in two-year tranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second tranche, to be launched in FY24, will place 150 satellites on orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2019\/08\/06\/the-small-sat-solution-to-hypersonic-weapons-explained\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/22_space_hypersonics.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The small sat solution to hypersonic weapons, explained<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">With speeds surpassing Mach 5 and the ability to maneuver mid-flight, hypersonic weapons defy the missile defense status quo.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the draft RFP, the agency wants a contractor to design and build eight Wide Field of View, or WFoV, satellites with infrared sensors capable of demonstrating an initial hypersonic weapon-tracking capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eight satellites will also be able to plug<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/05\/06\/how-low-earth-orbit-satellites-will-enable-jadc2\/\" target=_blank> into SDA\u2019s transport layer satellites<\/a>, which will establish a space-based mesh network with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms\/2020\/01\/16\/the-pentagon-wants-help-for-its-satellites-to-talk-to-each-other\/\" target=_blank>optical intersatellite cross links<\/a>. That will allow data collected by the WFoV sensors to flow from satellite to satellite until it is disseminated over tactical data links to the appropriate system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/05\/05\/heres-what-the-space-development-agency-wants-from-its-first-10-satellites\/\" target=_blank>The agency released an RFP on May 1 for the first 10 satellites<\/a> that will make up the transport layer. Those satellites are also set to launch in FY22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, SDA wants to launch Medium Field of View satellites in mid-FY23 focused on technologies needed for additional performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the performance goals laid out for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/opp\/3ceeb4a533e44f72ae18288f50c647ed\/view?keywords=%22space%20development%20agency%22&#038;sort=-relevance&#038;index=&#038;is_active=true&#038;page=1\" target=_blank>the eight WFoV satellites in the draft RFP<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Develop and deliver space vehicles integrated with infrared sensors that have sufficient sensitivity and processing to detect hypersonic vehicles from low Earth orbit.<\/li><li>Characterize performance of satellite-to-satellite and satellite-to-ground communication paths.<\/li><li>Integrate with a proliferated transport layer to directly provide tracking information over tactical data links.<\/li><li>Demonstrate interoperability between satellites provided by different vendors.<\/li><li>Assess how on-board processing, communications infrastructure and advanced algorithms can enable more efficient use of communications bandwidth.<\/li><li>Develop a concept of operations for a global tracking capability.<\/li><li>Verify functional and performance requirements to inform future trade studies on communications; space and ground processing; and the numbers, types and capabilities of space-based sensors needed for a full global capability.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responses to the draft are due May 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release comes shortly after the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced it plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/05\/12\/darpa-set-to-launch-first-blackjack-satellite-later-this-year\/\" target=_blank>launch its first Blackjack satellite into orbit later this year<\/a>, with more to follow in 2021. With Project Blackjack, DARPA seeks to demonstrate the value of low-Earth orbit satellites for the Defense Department. The small satellites will carry advanced technologies that will demonstrate space-based mesh networks and constellation autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SDA leadership previously
