That led to speculation of concerns surrounding the presumed front-runner for the post, former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent days, lawmakers and progressive activists have pushed for the incoming commander in chief to consider retired Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, former head of U.S. Central Command, and former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to lead the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, in an interview on CNN, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Karen Bass, D-Calif., said that Biden needs to choose a Black defense secretary or attorney general nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it would be great if he did,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd for defense secretary, there\u2019s two individuals that the Congressional Black Caucus would like to put forward: Lloyd Austin and Jeh Johnson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Flournoy, rumored to be former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton\u2019s pick for the Cabinet post if she had won the 2016 election, still has significant support among Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/17\/bidens-pick-for-va-secretary-may-be-a-post-911-veteran\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20298556461384.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Biden\u2019s pick for VA secretary may be a post-9\/11 veteran<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Former congressman Patrick Murphy and current Sen. Tammy Duckworth are among the names under consideration for the job.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier on Monday, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith, D-Wash., gave a full endorsement of Flournoy for the Defense Department post, and said he has already stumped for her to the transition team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think Michele Flournoy is hands down the best qualified person for the job,\u201d he said. \u201cThat does not mean that she\u2019s the only person that could do the job \u2026 But I think she is uniquely qualified, having her experience as under secretary of policy and the work that she has done since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden
