{"id":28712,"date":"2021-05-01T12:27:36","date_gmt":"2021-05-01T12:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/01\/army-approves-rapid-development-of-tactical-space-layer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:16:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:16:53","slug":"army-approves-rapid-development-of-tactical-space-layer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2021\/05\/01\/army-approves-rapid-development-of-tactical-space-layer\/","title":{"rendered":"Army approves rapid development of Tactical Space Layer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army recently approved rapid experimentation and prototyping to develop a new Tactical Space Layer that will enable the service to use overhead satellite imagery for beyond-line-of-sight targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing\/Space Cross-Functional Team is leading the Army\u2019s efforts to develop a new tactical geospatial intelligence capability, leveraging commercial satellite imagery to see farther, extend the battlefield, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2020\/08\/05\/how-the-army-plans-to-use-space-and-artificial-intelligence-to-hit-deep-targets-quickly\/\" target=_blank>and target beyond-line-of-sight threats<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s exciting about where we\u2019re at today is we\u2019re finding ways to use multiple sensors at multiple altitudes \u2014 to include airborne, high altitude and even in space \u2014 and be able to fuse that data in a positive way that, again, stretches the good attributes of those sensors and then fuse that data very rapidly,\u201d APNT\/Space CFT Director Willie Nelson said in an interview with C4ISRNET.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army showed the advances it\u2019s made in that area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/12\/us-army-uses-satellites-to-affect-the-state-of-the-battlefield\/\" target=_blank>during Project Convergence 2020<\/a>, a demonstration that took place last September at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona. Using artificial intelligence, the service was able to fuse data from commercial imagery satellites to create targeting data, then transport that to the battlefield via communications satellites where soldiers were able to fire on the threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following that demonstration, Army leaders bragged that they were able to cut down the sensor-to-shooter pipeline \u2014 the time it takes from satellite data collection to the delivery of targeting data to a weapon system \u2014 from 20 minutes to 20 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were trying to cut days off a process. We\u2019re down to cutting hours, minutes and seconds,\u201d Nelson told C4ISRNET.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signing of the Tactical Space Layer Abbreviated Capability Development Document, announced April 21, puts the progress made so far into writing, synchronizing related activities and informing requirements for procurement and fielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat the capability document does, is it helps codify our initial requirements and then guide the experimentation and prototyping efforts within communications, PNT and ISR to help us move down the path towards a program of record, or program of records,\u201d said Nelson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean that the Army is planning to build and launch its own satellite constellation, Nelson clarified. Instead, document will guide the Army\u2019s efforts to use existing or future commercial constellations, as well as satellites owned by the other services and the intelligence community, and to integrate them with Army platforms and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The APNT\/Space CFT worked with a number of other Army organizations to develop the capability document, including the Long-Range Precision Fires CFT; Army Space and Missile Defense Command; the Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors; the Project Manager for Positioning, Navigation and Timing; the Intelligence Center of Excellence; the Fires Center of Excellence; and the Army G-2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Army continues to
