{"id":28936,"date":"2018-04-09T20:52:52","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T20:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/09\/cmv-22-osprey-will-deploy-on-vinson-with-f-35c-in-2021\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:19:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:19:22","slug":"cmv-22-osprey-will-deploy-on-vinson-with-f-35c-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/09\/cmv-22-osprey-will-deploy-on-vinson-with-f-35c-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"CMV-22 Osprey will deploy on Vinson with F-35C in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. \u2014 There\u2019s been a lot of discussion about the Navy\u2019s progress towards F-35 Joint Strike Fighter integration into a carrier air wing, and the first operational deployment is slated to be on the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What isn\u2019t included in most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/04\/03\/navy-fighter-squadron-begins-switch-to-the-f-35\/\" target=_blank>Navy F-35C<\/a> discussions, however, is the fact that any first deployment of the Navy\u2019s JSF can\u2019t happen without the CMV-22 Osprey, soon to be the Navy\u2019s new carrier onboard delivery aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because the Osprey is currently the only aircraft that can land on a carrier flight deck with a large and heavy F-35C engine tucked inside its fuselage.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/01\/26\/navy-working-to-finalize-greyhound-to-osprey-transition\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HRQROWFG7JDXJJCW5QYVWDX3MA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy working to finalize Greyhound-to-Osprey transition<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The plan is to replace the aging C-2A Greyhounds with new V-22 Ospreys over the course of the next decade.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft that will actually deploy in 2021 have yet to be built, but they will be here fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCarrier onboard delivery has always been a mission profile for this aircraft from the start,\u201d Rich Meanor, a Boeing global marketing representative, said at the Navy League\u2019s annual Sea, Air and Space exposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that the Marine Corps has been flying these aircraft at sea for sometime now, but the Navy\u2019s CMV-22B will have slight modifications to better suit it for carrier operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those modifications come in the form of greater fuel capacity in the fuselage and wings that will allow the aircraft to carry up to 6,000 pounds for a distance of 1,100 nautical miles. That doesn\u2019t quite rival the aircraft it\u2019s replacing, the C-2A Greyhound, which has a cargo capacity of 8,000 pounds and a range of nearly 1,400 nautical miles.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=1ffa3c37-e933-47fa-9e79-5331f42f16f3\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-1ffa3c37-e933-47fa-9e79-5331f42f16f3.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A special high-frequency antenna has also been added to help the aircraft navigate long distances over open water, a feature Meanor said the Marine Corps version didn\u2019t need. There\u2019s also a beefed up cargo compartment intercom system, as the aircraft will also ferry people to and from the carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy will soon field two prototype aircraft featuring all the new bells and whistles, with the first one expected to be delivered in late 2019.
