The Corps said that no Marines were injured in the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service quickly launched an internal review of the procedures surrounding the ACVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the incident, the Corps reauthorized ACV training on waters protected from the surf, like Pendleton\u2019s Del Mar Boat Basin, but not out on the open ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/07\/21\/marines-pause-amphibious-combat-vehicle-waterborne-operations-following-rollover-in-california-high-surf\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4597369.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines pause amphibious combat vehicle waterborne operations following rollover in California high surf<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Marines aboard the two ACVs were able to evacuate and no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But new interim guidance, which a news release from headquarters called \u201cconservative,\u201d allows ACVs to operate on the open ocean when the average height of the tallest waves is no more than 4 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breaker height \u201callows the ACV to operate safely\u201d while allowing the Marine Corps \u201cto better understand surf conditions through ongoing vehicle testing,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Gen. David J. Furness, deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations, who made the initial halt decision, said in a news release, \u201cOur training and discipline allows us to continue sharpening our warfighting abilities to remain the Nation\u2019s premier expeditionary force in readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This summer was not the first time the Marine Corps has had to halt ACV operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/01\/07\/marine-amphibious-combat-vehicles-to-return-to-waterborne-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Corps paused<\/a> waterborne ACV use for four months after identifying a problem with the vehicle\u2019s tow rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2020, an amphibious assault vehicle \u2014 what the ACV is aiming to replace \u2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/03\/25\/the-marine-corps-amphibious-assault-vehicle-that-sank-and-killed-9-should-never-have-left-the-motor-pool-slides-into-investigation-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">sank<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/03\/25\/the-marine-corps-amphibious-assault-vehicle-that-sank-and-killed-9-should-never-have-left-the-motor-pool-slides-into-investigation-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">off the coast of California,<\/a> killing eight Marines and a Navy corpsman. The accident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/13\/commander-of-marine-unit-involved-in-aav-accident-that-killed-9-relieved\/\"
