The Dyess Air Force Base B-1 had just finished a training run when warning lights indicated they had a fire in the wing. A terrifying 25 minutes followed until the crew safely landed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/02\/air-force-b-1b-lancer-makes-emergency-landing-at-texas-airport\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Midland International Air and Space Port<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force had previously stayed quiet about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation. Some details emerged earlier this month after photos taken at the scene revealed the bomber had a blown hatch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident led to a temporary grounding of the whole B-1 fleet as all ejection seats were inspected. That grounding<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2018\/06\/19\/air-force-b-1b-bombers-to-resume-flights-following-ejection-seat-complaint\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover416036\"> was lifted Tuesday.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, at an event in Washington, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson shared the crew\u2019s story, and the hard and brave decisions made in seconds. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/11\/b-1-makes-emergency-landing-in-hawaii\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4431155.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">B-1 makes emergency landing in Hawaii just days before Air Force orders stand-down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The June incident occurred days before the Air Force ordered all Lancers grounded.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson\u2019s full comments, without edits, follow: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were out training. B-1 with [an] instructor pilot and a brand-new crew. So these are young people, maybe less than a year out of pilot training, less than two years out of college. This is a young crew. And they are out training, and the indicator lights goes off. They have a fire in the wing. This is not a good thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey go through their checklists on everything you are supposed to do if you\u2019ve got indication of a fire. A wing is where the fuel is. A fire in the wing is not a good day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey go through their checklists. They do everything they are supposed to do and they still have an indication that they have a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe next thing on the checklist is to eject from the airplane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t eject from the B-1 all at once. You go out \u2015 one crew member goes out before the other so there\u2019s a sequence you go so you don\u2019t hit a buddy on the way out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd so they started the ejection sequence. As you can imagine this is a pretty tense time. To eject from an aircraft anyway is a very high-risk thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the first crew member pulls the handles to eject. The cover comes off above the ejection seat. And nothing else happens. The seat doesn\u2019t fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithin two seconds of knowing that that had happened the aircraft commander says, \u2018Cease ejection. We\u2019ll try to land.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd that did two things. First the airman who\u2019s sitting on an eject seat where he\u2019s pulled the fire pins \u2015 and sits there for the next 25 minutes. Wondering whether \u2015 it\u2019s like pulling out the pin on a grenade and holding it as you come in to land. And not knowing whether the next piece of turbulence is going to cause you to launch. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a
