Erica Feehan said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis-Monthan is home to A-10Cs, HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, HC-130 Hercules transport jets and the EC-130H Compass Call electronic warfare planes. It\u2019s been on the cusp of change for years: Officials have tried and failed multiple times to dump at least some of the Air Force\u2019s 280 or so A-10s in favor of longer-range, stealthy platforms, and are replacing Pave Hawks and Compass Calls with newer models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force wanted to move Nellis\u2019s A-10 weapons instructor course and test and evaluation work to Arizona this year. The HH-60G\u2019s advanced tactics course for instructors, test and combat units would join them in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/10\/13\/heroism-pararescuemen-receive-bronze-star-for-fierce-afghanistan-battles\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635575181887902322-january-22-frontlines-5jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Heroism: Pararescuemen receive Bronze Star for fierce Afghanistan battles<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The pararescuemen put their own lives on the line time and again to save their Afghan partners during the 2019 battles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDavis-Monthan will play a critical role in reshaping U.S. airpower as home to the Air Force\u2019s close air support and rescue Centers of Excellence,\u201d acting Air Force Secretary John Roth said in June 2021. \u201cThis realignment will consolidate all A-10 and HH-60 test, training and weapons school activity at one location, allowing airmen in these mission areas to train together for future threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Nellis will keep those units even as it ends other missions. Transferring them was supposed to pave the way for the Las Vegas installation to become the service\u2019s \u201cfifth-generation center of excellence\u201d for jets like the F-35 and F-22 Raptor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Older F-15C Eagle fighter jets that were used for training at the Air Force Weapons School there have relocated to Eglin AFB, Florida, and to multiple Air National Guard units as test assets. Others left for intensive maintenance or retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their place, Nellis is bringing on the newer F-15E Strike Eagle jet and growing its F-35 Lightning II fighter fleet. If Congress signs off on that proposal, the downsized search-and-rescue fleet could give the Air Force the flexibility to consolidate the helicopters in one place later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the A-10, the Air Force is now switching gears to instead divest 21 \u201cWarthogs\u201d from Fort Wayne Air National Guard Base, Indiana. It wants to bring on the same number of F-16 Fighting Falcon jets to make that Guard branch more versatile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a bit of a puzzle,\u201d Air Force Chief of Staff Gen.
