{"id":30365,"date":"2020-02-20T18:00:37","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T18:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/20\/lockheeds-raider-x-already-under-construction\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:33:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:33:41","slug":"lockheeds-raider-x-already-under-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2020\/02\/20\/lockheeds-raider-x-already-under-construction\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed\u2019s Raider X enters construction in advance of US Army\u2019s decision on way forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=6bb98ba7-9554-4993-8144-e4f6ea620d17\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-6bb98ba7-9554-4993-8144-e4f6ea620d17.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You&#8217;re gonna want to watch the impressive maneuverability of the Sikorsky S-97 Raider during a flight demo for Army leadership in Florida.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. \u2014 Lockheed Martin\u2019s Sikorsky is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/14\/lockheeds-design-of-its-future-attack-recon-aircraft-touts-performance-at-the-x\/\" target=_blank>building its prototype<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/10\/03\/us-army-triggers-design-competition-for-future-attack-reconnaissance-helicopter\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Army\u2019s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft<\/a> competition ahead of the service actually choosing companies to build prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army will select two companies to proceed next month, Lockheed is already using funding as part of its contract to build its Raider X coaxial helicopter, Tim Malia, Sikorsky\u2019s FARA director, told a group of reporters Feb. 19 at the company\u2019s flight test facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army awarded full-scope contracts to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2019\/04\/23\/us-army-picks-5-teams-to-design-new-us-army-attack-recon-helicopter\/\" target=_blank> the five teams selected to design FARA<\/a>; those deals included funding to build aircraft. But when the Army chooses which two teams will move forward, that funding spigot essentially turns off for those that aren\u2019t picked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked what happens with Raider X, should the Army decides to go with other teams, Malia said: \u201cI don\u2019t anticipate that problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five teams that won awards in April 2019 to design FARA were: AVX Aircraft partnered with L3 Technologies; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/07\/01\/karem-northrop-raytheon-forge-team-for-armys-future-attack-recon-helo-competition\/\" target=_blank>Bell Helicopter<\/a>; Boeing; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/07\/01\/karem-northrop-raytheon-forge-team-for-armys-future-attack-recon-helo-competition\/\" target=_blank>a Karem Aircraft, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon team<\/a>; and Sikorsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sikorsky\u2019s offering is based on its X2 coaxial technology seen in its S-97 Raider and the Sikorsky-Boeing developed SB-1 Defiant, which are now both flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototype aircraft are expected to start flying in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, and the flight test is expected to run through 2023. The engineering and manufacturing development phase is expect to begin in FY24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the culmination of years of investment in the X2 Technology Demonstrator and the S-97 Raider aircraft that have proven the advanced technology and shown its ability to change the future battlefield,\u201d Malia told Defense News when the company first unveiled its design for FARA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FARA is intended to fill a critical capability gap currently being filled by AH-64E Apache attack helicopters teamed with Shadow unmanned aircraft following the retirement of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has tried and failed three times to fill the gap with an aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army also plans to buy another helicopter to fill the long-range assault mission, simultaneously replacing some UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters in the fleet.
