{"id":30433,"date":"2018-04-22T22:55:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-22T22:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/22\/strike-planned-at-italy-f-35-assembly-line\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:00:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:00:44","slug":"strike-planned-at-italy-f-35-assembly-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/04\/22\/strike-planned-at-italy-f-35-assembly-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Strike planned at Italy F-35 assembly line"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROME \u2015 Workers at Italy\u2019s F-35 assembly line have announced a strike for April 24 to protest the widespread use of employment agency contractors at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unions planning the one-day strike said 600 staff at Cameri Air Base \u2014 where Italy is performing F-35 final assembly work \u2014 are working on agency contracts, while only 270 are employed directly by Italian defense firm Leonardo, which runs the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no job security for staff,\u201d said Sergio Busca a representative of the UILM union at the site. \u201cLeonardo has long promised to hire them, but we are getting frustrated,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2018\/03\/07\/f-35-in-peril-as-italys-five-star-political-party-nears-power\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3924782.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">F-35 in peril as Italy\u2019s Five Star political party nears power<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Italy\u2019s commitment to the F-35 fighter jet may be in doubt, as an Italian political party which has promised to scrap the program edges closer to power.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owned by the Italian government and operated by state defense firm Leonardo in partnership with Lockheed Martin, Cameri has delivered nine F-35As to the Italian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five are now flying from Italy\u2019s Amendola Air Base and four are involved in pilot training at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 1, the F-35s at Amendola became operational assets within Italy\u2019s air defense system, the Italian Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/01\/25\/italy-receives-first-f-35b-assembled-outside-the-us\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the first F-35B<\/a> to be assembled outside the U.S., which is destined to fly with the Italian Navy, was handed over to Italy at Cameri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy is currently due to purchase 60 F-35As and 30 F-35Bs, while Cameri is also due to assemble 29 F-35As for the Royal Netherlands Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, the 101-acre base was named by the U.S. Department of Defense as its F-35 Heavy Airframe Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul and Upgrade facility for the European region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeonardo has said the high number of agency staff is normal, but we should have work here for decades with the maintenance activity, so why not hire the staff, given their qualifications?\u201d said Busca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Leonardo said it would start giving the staff full time positions this year. It put the number of agency staff at 520.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promise has not convinced workers at Cameri, who organized an overtime ban last Saturday as an initial protest, which Busca said was widely adhered to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unions have organized an assembly on Monday, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe strike is planned for Tuesday, on the same day Leonardo has invited us for talks,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is possible that at the assembly staff may vote to delay the strike in order to hear what the firm has to say.
