Gen. Ross Coffman said that planned annual demonstrations are not enough to ensure technologies from the various services work together. Instead, the joint forces need a shared lab for continued collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/artificial-intelligence\/2020\/09\/25\/the-army-just-conducted-a-massive-test-of-its-battlefield-artificial-intelligence-in-the-desert\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6358213.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Inside the Army\u2019s futuristic test of its battlefield artificial intelligence in the desert<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">At Project Convergence, U.S. Army Futures Command tested a number of emerging AI capabilities, including Prometheus, Dead Center,  FIRESTORM and more.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz, Coffman oversaw a sprawling demonstration known as Project Convergence, which the Army is calling \u201ca campaign of learning.\u201d With Project Convergence, the Army wants to use new network and AI capabilities to connect any sensor to the best shooter, regardless of domain or service. It is, in essence, the Army\u2019s best effort to make the Pentagon\u2019s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) concept a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of the services is developing its own piece of the CJADC2 puzzle. Most notably, the U.S. Air Force has doled out dozens of contracts and held several events as part of its Advanced Battle Management Systems effort. But in order to put the \u201cjoint\u201d in CJADC2, those independent efforts will need to be interoperable, with data able to flow from one service to the next seamlessly. The Army and the Air Force have made some progress on that front, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/20\/the-army-and-air-force-are-finally-on-the-same-page-with-a-plan-to-connect-the-military-what-happens-next\/\" target=\"_blank\">signing an agreement on Sept. 29 to work together<\/a> in developing \u201cmutual standards for data sharing and service interfacing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat the Army and the Air Force are agreeing to is, we\u2019re going to be able to see their data, they\u2019re going to be able to see our data. And as much as we can, we will come up with common standards,\u201d Hinote told C4ISRNET Oct. 15. \u201cBut even if we can\u2019t come up with common standards, we realize that translators are going to be something that will be with us for a long time, and we will build the translators necessary to make sure we can share.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has already dipped its toe into integrating systems from another service into its tactical network. During Project Convergence 2020, the Army was able to borrow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2020\/10\/12\/how-the-us-army-integrated-a-marine-f-35-jet-into-its-tactical-network\/\" target=\"_blank\">a U.S. Marine Corps F-35B and tie it into their sensor to shooter pipeline<\/a>. In one exercise, the Army was able to take satellite imagery, detect threats and develop targeting data through artificial intelligence, and then pass that data through their developmental networks to the F-35B, which was then able to eliminate the target. In another exercise, the F-35B acted as the sensor, detecting a threat and passing its targeting data to a ground-based weapons system, which then responded accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials have touted that collaboration \u2014 which was not a planned part of Project Convergence \u2014 for showing how the services can work together to detect and fire on beyond-line-of-sight targets. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/12\/transforming-battlefield-geometry-whats-to-come-in-project-convergence-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army wants to build on that success at Project Convergence 2021<\/a>, where it plans to integrate the joint forces into its campaign of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to scale this. We\u2019ve got to scale this at the joint level. We\u2019re going to do that in \u201921 with the Air Force, the Marines and the Navy have all committed to Project Convergence \u201921,\u201d said Coffman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Kingdom has also agreed to participate, and Australia is a maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/show-reporter\/ausa\/2020\/10\/12\/us-army-uses-satellites-to-affect-the-state-of-the-battlefield\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-500883304.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Satellites played a starring role at Project Convergence<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">To put it bluntly, the U.S. Army is not exactly known for its space savviness. But it&#039;s trying to change that as it prepares to face advanced adversaries in future conflicts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as excited as the Army is to bring in those partners in 2021, Coffman noted that military leaders need to collaborate more than just once a year. To foster that teamwork and reduce redundancy, Coffman is calling for a joint lab where the services can develop their CJADC2 systems together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need a joint laboratory where we set this up in the lab \u2014 we ask the Air Force to bring their systems, the Navy to bring their systems, the Marines to bring their systems \u2014 so that we can continue to learn not just once a year, but a monthly basis: Here we are, here is where we need to go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coffman did not elaborate on where
