Stephen Wilson, the Air Force\u2019s vice chief of staff, told reporters Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re about two months away from having the results of that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/electronic-warfare\/2017\/11\/29\/air-force-leaders-launch-new-electronic-warfare-research\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635622024933500462-photo-wilson-stephen-apjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force leaders launch new electronic warfare research<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Recognizing that future wars will not be solely fought on ground, sea and air, the U.S. Air Force is kicking off a third-study on how it plans to use electronic warfare (EW).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson announced the EW study in late 2017. Then, Brig. Gen. David Gaedecke, the Air Force\u2019s director of cyberspace operations and warfighting integration, was tapped earlier this year to lead an \u201centerprise capability collaboration team\u201d that would explore new ways to perform electronic warfare and how to integrate those capabilities across the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaedecke will brief the results at the Weapons and Tactics Conference held Jan. 16 and 17 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Wilson said. A public report is expected to follow in the months afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Wilson didn\u2019t preview any of the report\u2019s recommendations, he said that the findings make clear that the Air Force may be falling behind in the sphere of electronic warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe haven\u2019t been paying attention to what I would call spectrum dominance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlmost everything we do in the military goes through the spectrum when you think about it, across any force. I\u2019ll use an airplane [as an example.] An airplane uses GPS, it uses data links, it uses communications, it uses radars. Its weapons all go through the spectrum. If you don\u2019t dominate the spectrum, you quickly resort to a World War II Army or Navy or Marine Corps or Air Force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although few details about the scope of the study have emerged, a January 2018 request for information stated that it would identify near and long-term capability gaps, from fiscal years 2018 to 2040, with an emphasis on threats that would occur in a highly contested environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParticular areas of interest\u201d include the radio, visible, infrared, ultraviolet and millimeter wave portions of the spectrum, as well as space, cyber and directed energy, the RFI said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of the study, the team contacted experts, industry, and the other services for feedback, Wilson said. It also brought in red teams to help isolate vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electronic warfare study follows two earlier efforts, known as Enterprise Capability Collaboration Teams, that explored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/farnborough\/2018\/07\/16\/whats-going-on-with-americas-next-fighter-designs\/\" target=\"_blank\">air superiority<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-force-association\/2017\/09\/18\/air-force-looks-to-transform-command-and-control-enterprise\/\" target=\"_blank\">multi-domain command and control<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/c2-comms\/2017\/01\/31\/air-force-wants-data-to-reach-decision-makers-more-rapidly\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/soldier-airman-cloud.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force wants data to reach decision-makers more rapidly<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Program managers envision a \u201ccombat cloud,\u201d a complex network that would amalgamate data across multiple platforms in a dynamic, distributed environment.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While these initiatives usually don\u2019t directly result in funding for new capabilities, they help guide the Air Force\u2019s long-term thinking about a problem, oftentimes informing follow-on studies. In some cases, the findings also prompt experiments such as the \u201cData to Decision\u201d campaign that looked at using cloud-based technologies to expedite decision-making.
