{"id":31597,"date":"2021-04-21T13:38:54","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T13:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/21\/coming-soon-an-announcement-on-which-army-and-navy-units-will-move-to-the-space-force\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:14:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:14:49","slug":"coming-soon-an-announcement-on-which-army-and-navy-units-will-move-to-the-space-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2021\/04\/21\/coming-soon-an-announcement-on-which-army-and-navy-units-will-move-to-the-space-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming soon: An announcement on which Army and Navy units will move to the Space Force"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/04\/08\/space-force-unveils-plans-for-space-systems-command\/\" target=_blank>Space Force<\/a> has come to an agreement with the Army and Navy on which units will move over to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/12\/18\/space-force-members-finally-get-a-name-guardians\/\" target=_blank>new space service<\/a>, the Space Force\u2019s No. 2 officer said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the last several months we have finalized with the Army and the Navy \u2026 what we as all of the services agree are the forces that should be transitioned in,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/10\/06\/space-force-gets-its-first-vice-chief-of-space-operations\/\" target=_blank>Gen. David Thompson<\/a>, the vice chief of space operations, said during a panel at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/show-reporter\/c4isrnet-conference\/\" target=_blank>C4ISRNet Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can expect details from both services soon,\u201d he added. \u201cThe timeline is in work now, and you\u2019ll see later this year \u2014 and continuing into the next year \u2014 it will be a phased process by which that transition occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson pointed to the Navy\u2019s Mobile User Objective System as one example of a mission that will transfer over to the Space Force. MUOS is a constellation of five Ultra High-Frequency narrowband communications satellites, and is currently managed by the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command\u2019s space program office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat system, its operation center and the sustainment folks that support it are already in the process of the plan to transfer in, in the coming years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as what kinds of units will transfer in from the Army, Thompson said he wanted to wait until the Army is ready to make an announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI won\u2019t go into detail there, because we want to finish the planning,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to communicate what\u2019s happening together with the Army. They\u2019ve been a good partner in that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force is set to grow from about 2,400 active-duty members to about 6,400 people by the end of 2021, Chief of Space Operations Gen. John \u201cJay\u201d Raymond said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2021\/01\/13\/can-biden-solve-the-space-forces-public-relations-crisis\/\" target=_blank>in December<\/a>. Some of those new guardians are expected to transfer in from the Army and Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a February interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/03\/space-force-is-looking-for-a-few-good-soldiers-sailors\/\" target=_blank>Military Times<\/a>, Raymond said he expected at least 34 soldiers and sailors to transfer into the Space Force this year, with hundreds more joining them in 2022. However, he stressed that troops would not be forced to move to the new service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t order somebody to come in the Space Force,\u201d he
