{"id":31618,"date":"2022-03-01T20:02:43","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T20:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/01\/lockheed-northrop-choose-payloads-for-space-force-missile-warning-satellites\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:10:16","slug":"lockheed-northrop-choose-payloads-for-space-force-missile-warning-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2022\/03\/01\/lockheed-northrop-choose-payloads-for-space-force-missile-warning-satellites\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed, Northrop choose payloads for Space Force missile warning satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman announced Tuesday they have selected payload providers for their respective segments of the Space Force\u2019s Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both companies are on contract to build a portion of the first block of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/smr\/space-competition\/2021\/08\/24\/space-forces-next-generation-of-missile-warning-satellites-passes-major-design-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Next-Gen OPIR satellites<\/a> \u2014 Lockheed to develop three satellites based in geostationary orbit and Northrop two polar satellites destined for highly elliptical orbit. Next-Gen OPIR is the successor to today\u2019s Space-Based Infrared System, which detects and tracks ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed and Northrop both staged competitions for their satellites\u2019 mission payloads. For the GEO segment, Lockheed chose Raytheon Technologies and a Northrop and Ball Aerospace team to develop payloads for the first two satellites and announced today that it has chosen Raytheon\u2019s design for the third satellite. Northrop, which was also choosing between a polar payload it developed with Ball and a second built by Raytheon, selected its own team\u2019s payload for the two polar satellites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed in 2018 received a $2.9 billion development contract for the first three GEO satellites, followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/01\/05\/space-force-awards-lockheed-martin-49-billion-for-missile-warning-satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\">$4.9 billion contract last year for manufacturing<\/a>. The Space Force in 2020 awarded Northrop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/05\/19\/northrop-grumman-receives-24-billion-for-two-missile-defense-satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\">$2.37 billion contract<\/a> for the polar segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph Rickers, Lockheed\u2019s vice president for the Next-Gen OPIR GEO program, said in a press release Tuesday both teams are making good progress on their payloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor this \u2018Go-Fast\u2019 program, both teams had to meet stringent schedule and performance requirements \u2014 which they\u2019ve done,\u201d Rickers said. \u201cI want to thank both teams for their tireless work and we look forward to the first flights of both the mission payloads.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both GEO providers have completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/02\/09\/space-force-missile-warning-sensor-passes-environmental-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">critical design reviews and environmental testing<\/a> and are expected to deliver their first payloads to Lockheed in 2023. The first GEO launch is scheduled for 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop\u2019s Vice President for OPIR and Geospatial Systems Sarah Willoughby said in a release the team\u2019s solution \u201ccombines Northrop Grumman\u2019s proven experience in missile warning and defense with Ball Aerospace\u2019s expertise in optical sensors and mission data processing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur team\u2019s solution for NGP will assure continuous coverage of the northern hemisphere \u2014 especially the Arctic region \u2014 to protect against incoming threats,\u201d Willoughby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop and Ball will develop the two payloads at Northrop\u2019s facility in Azusa,
