{"id":31812,"date":"2018-03-26T16:21:16","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T16:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/26\/raytheon-darpa-developing-technology-to-control-drone-swarms\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:23:09","slug":"raytheon-darpa-developing-technology-to-control-drone-swarms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2018\/03\/26\/raytheon-darpa-developing-technology-to-control-drone-swarms\/","title":{"rendered":"Raytheon, DARPA developing technology to control drone swarms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Raytheon is developing technology for soldiers to control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/26\/future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">unmanned vehicle<\/a> swarms with voice and gesture commands, according to a company news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology is being developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency\u2019s Offensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics, or OFFSET, program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon\u2019s BBN Technologies division is developing a visual interface that allows for \u201cdrag and drop\u201d creation and manipulation of swarm tactics, a game-based simulator to evaluate those tactics, and a physical swarm test bed to perform live tactics evaluation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DARPA has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2018\/02\/21\/darpa-awards-first-contracts-in-drone-swarms-project\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">awarded contracts<\/a> to Northrop Grumman Mission Systems and Lockheed Martin for the OFFSET program. These Phase 1 contracts are part of the program\u2019s \u201cswarm sprints\u201d and an effort to enable rapid development by leveraging and combining emerging swarm technology. Swarm sprints focus on five key areas: swarm tactics, swarm autonomy, human-swarm teaming, virtual environment and physical test bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon\u2019s swarming technology will be applied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2016-12-07\">DARPA in unmanned systems meant for multiple domains<\/a>, not only unmanned aerial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/unmanned\/2018\/03\/26\/what-new-russian-weapon-took-out-this-ukranian-drone\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-491277690.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What new Russian weapon took out this Ukranian drone?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Last week, on the outskirts of Donbas, a Ukrainian non governmental organization encountered what appears to be a new counter-drone system from Russia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe imagine seeing swarm tactics where you\u2019ll be conducting reconnaissance with a swarm of air and ground robots. Or identifying ingress and egress points, or perhaps identifying novel ways to construct a perimeter of an area of operations,\u201d Timothy Chung, DARPA\u2019s OFFSET program manager, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c7KPBHPEMM0\" title=\"\" class=\"\">video<\/a> about the first sprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is playing catch-up in developing swarming technology. Chinese companies are setting records in unmanned system swarming.
