Ford is ready to go next year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been cannibalizing parts from a future aircraft carrier to ensure that the much-delayed and costly carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/naval\/2021\/08\/09\/navy-conducts-final-blast-in-ford-full-ship-shock-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gerald R. Ford<\/a> is ready to deploy next year, officials confirmed this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the parts transferred to Ford from the under-construction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/naval\/2020\/07\/23\/welding-suspended-on-future-carrier-john-f-kennedy-after-small-fire\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fyour-navy%22%2C%22from%22%3A65%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" target=\"_blank\">John F. Kennedy<\/a> are expected to impact that future carrier\u2019s construction schedule, according to Capt. Clay Doss, a Navy spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kennedy cannibalization includes \u201cHMI screens for stores elevators as well as motor controllers, power supplies, small pumps, limit switches and valve actuators for various systems throughout the ship,\u201d Doss said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not unusual early in a program and will occur less often as supply support matures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doss called the cannibalization of parts \u201ca project management tool\u201d outlined in the Navy\u2019s joint fleet maintenance manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/08\/09\/navy-conducts-final-blast-in-ford-full-ship-shock-trials\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6772244.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy conducts final blast in Ford full-ship shock trials<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy completed full-ship shock trials on aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford with no major casualties and less damage than expected to repair during an upcoming maintenance availability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process allows for parts and material to shift between vessels in maintenance or under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt occurred only after confirming the parts or materials were not available in the supply system and\/or that alternate sources were not available,\u201d Doss said. \u201cA replacement plan was also required in each case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duane Bourne, a spokesman for Huntington Ingalls Industries, which is building Kennedy, said such a practice is common with first-in-class ships when supply systems for those ships are still being established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are working with our Navy customer to build a supply system to include spare parts for the Ford class,\u201d he said. \u201cKennedy is scheduled to be delivered in 2024 with its complete warfare systems and with the Joint Strike Fighter (F-35C) capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lack of parts for the Navy\u2019s premier next-generation carrier is the latest issue to befall Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was originally slated to deploy in 2018, and the carrier\u2019s cost had ballooned from $10.5 billion to $13 billion as of this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ship has faced a series of technical problems and equipment malfunctions as the Navy works to fold in 23 new technologies on the ship, such as advanced weapons elevators and the electromagnetic aircraft launch system, or EMALS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannibalizing Kennedy to make sure Ford is good to go is understandable \u201cbut a really bad habit,\u201d according to Bradley Martin, a retired surface warfare officer who spent two-thirds of his 30-year Navy career at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFord is not brand new,\u201d Martin told Navy Times. \u201cThis should have been known.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/naval\/2020\/07\/23\/welding-suspended-on-future-carrier-john-f-kennedy-after-small-fire\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fyour-navy%22%2C%22from%22%3A65%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Shipyard suspends welding on future carrier John F.
