{"id":32218,"date":"2022-03-10T17:35:04","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T17:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/10\/missile-defense-agency-fires-patriot-missile-from-thaad-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:37:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:37:59","slug":"missile-defense-agency-fires-patriot-missile-from-thaad-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2022\/03\/10\/missile-defense-agency-fires-patriot-missile-from-thaad-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Missile Defense Agency fires Patriot missile from THAAD system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>UPDATE <\/i>\u2014 <i>This story has been updated to include a statement from Raytheon regarding its THAAD and Patriot integration work.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Missile Defense Agency successfully launched the most advanced version of the Patriot missile from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/08\/30\/first-remotely-launched-terminal-missile-defense-test-deemed-a-success\/\" target=\"_blank\">Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system<\/a> in a Feb. 24 test at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, Lockheed Martin told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement \u2014 or PAC-3 MSE \u2014 was fired using the THAAD system against a simulated incoming target, Scott Arnold, vice president of integrated air and missile defense at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said in a March 9 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed manufactures both the MSE and the THAAD system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PAC-3 MSE interceptor flew to the intercept point and subsequently self-destructed as planned, Arnold said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test proves PAC-3 MSE can be integrated directly into the THAAD weapon system, providing the capability to launch MSE missiles separately from a Patriot fire unit, Arnold said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Raytheon Technologies-made Patriot is the U.S. Army\u2019s regional air and missile defense system. The service is working to replace the system with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/11\/army-closes-in-on-replacement-for-patriot-air-defense-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new integrated air and missile defense system<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THAAD, which is operated by the Army but owned by MDA, provides defensive capability in the terminal \u2014 or final \u2014 phase of a threat missile\u2019s flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2022\/01\/21\/thaad-in-first-operational-use-destroys-midrange-ballistic-missile-in-houthi-attack\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/THAADIsrael.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">THAAD, in first operational use, destroys midrange ballistic missile in Houthi attack<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The United Arab Emirates is the first to use the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System in an attack by Houthi militants. It successfully took out a mid-range ballistic missile aimed at a civilian site in the country.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith this successful demonstration, the Patriot M903 Launching Stations and PAC-3 MSE interceptors can be deployed with the THAAD Weapon System using only the THAAD radar and TFCC (Fire Control &amp; Communication) for support,\u201d Arnold explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to do this means the U.S. military now has a \u201ccritical multi-tier missile defense capability\u201d with the ability to go up against both current and emerging threats, he said. Having upper-tier and lower-tier interceptors within one battery expands the battlespace, increases the area of defensive coverage and adds flexibility to combatant commanders in how they use the systems, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army and MDA have worked rapidly over the past several years to integrate THAAD and Patriot in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/19\/army-to-tie-two-critical-air-and-missile-defense-systems-together-within-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">an urgent operational need from the service on the Korean Peninsula<\/a>, where there is a need for a defensive capability for maneuver forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple tests were conducted to progressively integrate the systems. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/10\/01\/mda-and-army-see-successful-patriot-and-thaad-test-after-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\">a previous test,<\/a> for example, the Raytheon-made THAAD AN\/TPY-2 radar detected and tracked a threat target missile and provided information to the Patriot system, which then launched a PAC-3 MSE to destroy the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent test only required the need of the Patriot launcher and interceptors \u2014 and not its fire control system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integration effort uses some of the principles of decoupling launchers and radars so an operator, for instance, can use a THAAD radar \u2014 which can see farther than a Raytheon-made Patriot radar \u2014 but decide to engage a Patriot interceptor depending on the threat picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to use the THAAD radar also gets more out of the PAC-3 MSE weapon fired from Patriot units, which outperforms the organic Patriot radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon has been \u201cworking with the THAAD and Patriot teams to develop a concept of operations and radar software build to help enable the MSE integration into the weapon system,\u201d according to a company spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re wrapping up that urgent operational need and we\u2019ll get that out the door soon,\u201d Vice Adm.
