Gen. Jim Slife told reporters at a roundtable here Tuesday. \u201cThe supply system is going to take a while to react to that because we don\u2019t replace all that many of them right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/07\/air-force-special-ops-osprey-stuck-in-norway-wilderness-after-mishap\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Osprey-on-Senja.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force special ops Osprey stuck in Norway wilderness after mishap<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Osprey has sat among the ferns and salamanders of the High North since Aug. 12.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clutch allows the engine to power the gear system that turns the Osprey\u2019s massive rotors. Either engine can drive both rotors in case one engine fails. The issue arises when the clutch slips and corrects itself, rapidly switching that load between motors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose large, transient torque spikes exceed the limitations of the engines and the gearboxes,\u201d Slife noted at a Sept. 7 event hosted by the Air and Space Forces Association. \u201cEach one of them results in a \u2018Christmas tree\u2019 of caution lights in the cockpit and some pretty squirrely flight control inputs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those torque spikes can destabilize the Osprey after just one-millionth of a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifteen such clutch malfunctions have happened so far, including four in the Air Force and 11 in the Marine Corps. The military has averaged about one clutch incident annually for the past 14 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The components that have failed are around the middle of their expected life span and have been used for years, Slife added Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/08\/17\/us-air-force-grounds-osprey-fleet-after-dangerous-clutch-problem\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635669551125598803-ospreyjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Air Force grounds Osprey fleet after dangerous clutch problem<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Air Force Special Operations Command has begun investigating what is causing the clutches in the aircraft to slip.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force\u2019s first encounter with a problematic clutch came in 2010, he said. Two have occurred on AFSOC aircraft in the past few months. None of the service\u2019s incidents happened during combat operations, and aviators have landed safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One CV-22 that suffered the clutch mishap and made an emergency landing on a nature reserve in Norway\u2019s High North last month should be off of the remote island next week, Slife said. Moving ahead with the plan to replace clutches could buy the service more time and keep airmen safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would I say to myself in the aftermath of a fatal mishap, [if] we discovered that the reason was this clutch issue?\u201d Slife said. \u201cWould I look back and say that I did everything that I could? \u2026 I couldn\u2019t answer that in the affirmative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commander said he wasn\u2019t aware of the problem until it happened in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is one of several major defects, known as \u201cCategory 1 deficiencies,\u201d plaguing the aircraft. Or do we need to address that as well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special ops airmen fly their 52 Ospreys on long-range infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions where its ability to behave like either a fixed-wing plane or a helicopter comes in handy. The Marine Corps will own the vast majority of more than 450 V-22s in the joint program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airframe\u2019s woes have persisted for years, thanks to the rough nature of special operations and other factors that stress the massive tiltrotors and their internal wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCV-22 readiness keeps me up at night,\u201d Brig. Gen. Dale White, then a colonel in charge of special operations programs at Air Force Materiel Command, said in 2019. \u201cIt\u2019s not what it needs to be.
