{"id":32445,"date":"2022-05-18T14:59:48","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T14:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/18\/south-korea-selects-bells-505-helicopter-for-military-training\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:38:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:38:18","slug":"south-korea-selects-bells-505-helicopter-for-military-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/asia-pacific\/2022\/05\/18\/south-korea-selects-bells-505-helicopter-for-military-training\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea selects Bell\u2019s 505 helicopter for military training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MELBOURNE, Australia \u2014 South Korea has chosen the Bell 505 as its next military training helicopter, according to the manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell, which is a subsidiary of American firm Textron, announced that South Korea will acquire 40 of the helos to train its helicopter pilots, replacing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2022\/03\/10\/south-koreas-president-elect-promises-military-buildup\/\">aging fleets<\/a> of the country\u2019s Army and Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deliveries of the helicopters, which are also known as the Jet Ranger X, will be completed by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell did not disclose the value of the contract, although South Korea\u2019s Yonhap news agency, citing the country\u2019s Defense Acquisition Program Administration, reported it was worth $133 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAPA added that the contract will include eight simulators to complement the helicopters, with deliveries of the latter starting next year. The simulators are to be manufactured in South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Republic of Korea\u2019s selection of the Bell 505, after a rigorous review process, confirms it is the preferred next-generation military helicopter trainer globally for training pilots,\u201d said Patrick Moulay, senior vice president of international commercial sales at Bell. \u201cWith the ever-increasing operational needs and challenges faced by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, Bell is privileged to play a part in training future ROKA and ROKN pilots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bell 505 is powered by a single engine that is fitted with dual-channel, full-authority digital engine controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airframe weighs 2,180 pounds empty, or 4,475 pounds fully loaded, and can carry a single pilot and up to four passengers. The type made its first flight in 2014, and Bell delivered the first helicopter three years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jet Ranger X is also operated by the Jamaican military, Montenegrin Air Force, the Indonesian Navy and the Japan Coast Guard. It is also flown by several police departments in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea\u2019s military currently operates a mix of Bell UH-1 and MD 500
