{"id":32559,"date":"2014-10-28T17:10:20","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T17:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2014\/10\/28\/us-military-sales-to-allies-tops-34b-in-2014\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:39:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:39:55","slug":"us-military-sales-to-allies-tops-34b-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/home\/2014\/10\/28\/us-military-sales-to-allies-tops-34b-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"US Military Sales to Allies Tops $34B in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">source GAIA package: Sx_DefenseNews_M5201410310270021_9E88.zip   Origin key: Sx_DefenseNews_M5201410310270021   imported at Thu Jan 21 13:48:30 2016  <p>The US government helped facilitate the sale of $34.2 billion worth of defense equipment to allies during fiscal 2014, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on Monday, a slight uptick from the roughly $30 billion in sales in 2013.<\/p> <p>Sales were led by a few blockbuster deals that helped some of the largest US defense firms continue to post strong numbers despite the relative slowing of defense spending by the Pentagon.<\/p> <p>Leading the list was the $11 billion purchase of 10 Patriot missile batteries by Qatar in July, a deal that included 24 Apache helicopters and 500 Javelin anti-tank missiles.<\/p> <p>American defense companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin manufacture the Patriot missile hardware and Javelin anti-tank missiles, while Boeing produces the Apache.<\/p> <p>In August, the department also announced a $2.5 billion agreement with the UAE for 4,500 mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles MRAPs \u2014 mostly made by Navistar Defense \u2014 and another $2 billion deal with Saudi Arabia to upgrade the country&#8217;s Boeing-made airborne warning and control system fleet.<\/p> <p>In January, Singapore spent $2.4 billion to upgrade its Lockheed Martin-made F-16s.<\/p> <p>Ramping up foreign military sales (FMS) with partner nations falls in line with the overall defense strategy outlined by the Obama administration to train and equip allies to handle their own security issues, as opposed to relying on US military power to maintain stability in their backyards.<\/p> <p>&#8220;FMS agreements result in more-capable partners who are able to take on missions that might otherwise fall to US forces,&#8221; said Vice Adm. Joseph Rixey, DSCA director, in a statement. &#8220;In the broader foreign policy realm, FMS often serves as the basis for long-term relationships between partner countries and the United States. In a relationship context, every single sale is important to us.&#8221;<\/p> <p>The United States also signed a few headline-grabbing deals with the Iraqi government in 2014, including the sale of AT-6C Texan II aircraft for $790 million, as well as separate agreements to sell hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Abrams tank rounds and Hellfire missiles as the Baghdad government continues to battle the radical Islamic State group in the north and west of the country.<\/p> <p>This month, DSCA <a alt=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014310050005\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">rolled out a new strategy document<\/a> aimed at making the FMS process more responsive to allied nations&#8217; needs by outlining a legislative push to streamline some key provisions of the Arms Export Control Act, which would simplify the transfer of defense equipment overseas.<\/p> <p>US foreign military sales deals shot up to a record of $69.1 billion in fiscal 2012 mostly on the back of a $29 billion megadeal with Saudi Arabia for 84 Boeing-made F-15s. \u25a0<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
