{"id":32961,"date":"2018-04-25T17:29:02","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T17:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/25\/russia-reportedly-makes-progress-on-s-400-air-defense-system-sale-to-india\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:41:16","slug":"russia-reportedly-makes-progress-on-s-400-air-defense-system-sale-to-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/04\/25\/russia-reportedly-makes-progress-on-s-400-air-defense-system-sale-to-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia reportedly makes progress on S-400 air-defense system sale to India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Russian officials expect to sign a deal with India for Russia\u2019s S-400 surface-to-air missile defense system, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-russia-india-missiles\/russia-says-expects-to-sign-deal-with-india-on-s-400-missiles-sale-ifax-idUSKBN1HW0PQ\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Interfax<\/a> news agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that in the current year we will sign the corresponding contract document,\u201d Interfax quoted Dmitry Shugaev, the head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All technical aspects of the deal have reportedly been agreed upon, but the price tag is still under negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/defsys\/s-400-triumf\/#en-1912-7\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> S-400 Triumf<\/a> is one of Russia\u2019s most advanced air defense systems. It is currently deployed in the Russian enclave in Kaliningrad, recently annexed territory in Crimea and in Tartus, Syria, to protect Russian and Syrian air and naval units. The system is also deployed throughout western and eastern Russia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past several years, Russia has been marketing the S-400 to a variety of potential buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a long and drawn out saga, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/12\/29\/turkey-russia-reportedly-sign-loan-deal-for-s-400-air-defense-system\/\">Turkish officials confirmed<\/a> in December 2017 that Ankara and Moscow had signed a contract for at least one S-400 system, with delivery expected by early 2020. In November 2014, Russia agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2018\/04\/russia-delivers-1st-s-400-missile-defense-regiment-to-china\/\">sell China four to six S-400 battalions<\/a>. However, it is unclear if any S-400s have been delivered to India.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia and India have a history of collaborating and sharing missile technology. Not only does India currently operate the Russian-made S-300 \u2015 the S-400\u2019s Cold War predecessor \u2015 but the two countries also partnered throughout the late 1990s and 2000s to develop the
