{"id":33280,"date":"2021-08-11T01:39:23","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T01:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/08\/11\/us-senate-votes-down-50b-defense-infrastructure-boost\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:47:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:47:55","slug":"us-senate-votes-down-50b-defense-infrastructure-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/08\/11\/us-senate-votes-down-50b-defense-infrastructure-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senate votes down $50B defense infrastructure boost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 The U.S. Senate on Tuesday rejected a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/08\/06\/proponents-of-50-billion-defense-infrastructure-amendment-weigh-back-up-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican proposal to add $50 billion in defense infrastructure spending<\/a> to Democrats\u2019 budget plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though Republicans hoped to stage a tough vote for centrist Democrats from states with military facilities, Democrats remained unified and the amendment was defeated on a bipartisan basis, 53-46. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans Sens. Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Mike Braun voted with the majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amendment effort, led by Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., offered billions for shipyard rehabilitation projects, supply depots, nuclear infrastructure and 5G telecommunications gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of many amendments expected to be considered during an hours-long series of votes before Democrats approve the resolution  to tee up a $3.5 trillion spending plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats blocked consideration of the amendment when it was offered for a massive $1 trillion infrastructure package, which the Senate approved earlier in the day. When Shelby offered his amendment again for the budget resolution, he accused Democrats of turning a blind eye to their states\u2019 military infrastructure needs and economic interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese infrastructure projects are absolutely critical to our national security, they impact millions of jobs across the country, both military and civilian,\u201d Shelby said ahead of the vote. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about projects not just in my home state of Alabama but in Arizona, Georgia, Virginia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, California, Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, and many more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.I., countered that the panel\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/08\/02\/defense-top-line-will-probably-go-up-key-dems-see-gop-boost-as-path-to-a-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">bipartisan vote to raise the defense top-line $25 billion<\/a> above President Joe Biden\u2019s request was a sufficient hike. He argued the wording in Shelby amendment makes it over broad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs it\u2019s written, this [amendment] provides over $50 billion in funding for unspecified uses,\u201d Reed said. \u201cIt could be infrastructure, it could be military platforms, it could be a host of things.
