The Swedish company says it remains on schedule to deliver an order from the United Arab Emirates for three jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft, a modified Bombardier Global 6000, flew from Saab\u2019s Linkoping airfield for a 1 hour and 46 minute flight to begin checking out the handling and flight performance of the jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the moment the aircraft is only fitted out with flight test instrumentation. The sensors that give the GlobalEye its swing role surveillance capability will be integrated later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flight follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/02\/23\/first-look-saab-unveils-globaleye-surveillance-aircraft-for-the-middle-east\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the official roll-out of the aircraft at Linkoping last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saab officials are reticent about giving any timelines regarding delivery of the three jets for the UAE but say they are hitting the development milestones as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/globaleye_first_flight_take_off_high_res_300dpi.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/globaleye_first_flight_take_off_high_res_300dpi.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/globaleye_first_flight_take_off_high_res_300dpi.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/globaleye_first_flight_take_off_high_res_300dpi.jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/globaleye_first_flight_take_off_high_res_300dpi.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GlobalEye took off on its maiden flight March 14 from\nSaab\u2019s airfield in Link\u00f6ping, Sweden. The aircraft, a modified Bombardier Global 6000 business jet with radars and other sensors for AEW, maritime and ground surveillance, undertook a 1 hour 46 minutes test flight collecting extensive flight-test\ndata using the on-board instrumentation suite. (Saab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft is able to undertake airborne early warning, maritime and ground surveillance simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saab\u2019s new Erieye Extended Range radar, Leonardo\u2019s Seaspray maritime search radar and a Flir Systems electro optical sensor are all part of the sensor fit for the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anders Carp, the head of Saab\u2019s surveillance business area, said the long-endurance aircraft was the \u201cworld\u2019s most advanced swing-role surveillance\u201d aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carp told reporters the company expected to see a great demand for swing-role surveillance assets able to support all branches of the military as well as undertake civil society roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UAE ordered the first two GlobalEye jets in late 2015 and followed that up with an order for a third aircraft last year. The Gulf state is calling the aircraft the-swing role surveillance system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Thailand, Greece, Pakistan, Mexico and Sweden all use the earlier version of Erieye radar installed in either Saab turboprop or Embraer jet\u200e aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saab officials estimate the new extended range Erieye being installed on the UAE aircraft has a 70 percent better performance than existing variants of the radar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lars Tossman, the head of the Saab airborne survelliance unit, said the company was in \u201congoing dialogue with a lot of potential customer around the world.\u201d He pointed to Latin America, Europe and Asia as among the areas of market interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has already signalled its interest in NATO\u2019s Boeing E-3A replacement, although that requirement is a number of years off.
