{"id":33547,"date":"2018-03-26T11:37:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T11:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/26\/future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:45:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:45:45","slug":"future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/26\/future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Future unmanned aircraft to do the \u2018dull\u2019 and \u2018dangerous\u2019 work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The one-star leading the Army\u2019s modernization efforts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/01\/30\/future-vertical-lift-plan-poised-to-lead-army-out-of-acquisition-dark-ages\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Future Vertical Lift <\/a>says the service envisions using its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2017\/10\/24\/armys-future-vertical-lift-you-cannot-use-a-cookie-cutter-acquisition-process\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> future unmanned aircraft systems<\/a> for the \u201cdull\u201d and the \u201cdangerous\u201d work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army doesn\u2019t just see its UAS teaming with manned aircraft like it does now with AH-64 attack helicopters and Shadow UAS, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2016\/10\/04\/army-details-draft-robotics-and-autonomous-systems-strategy-at-ausa\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">envisions more advanced teaming than the current concept of manned-unmanned teaming<\/a> \u2014 or MUM-T \u2014 allows, Brig. Gen. Wally Rugen, told a small group of reporters in a March 20 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rugen is the leader of the newly formed FVL<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/11\/06\/armys-modernization-command-taking-shape-under-freshly-picked-leaders\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> Cross-Functional Team (CFT)<\/a>, that addresses the third top priority out of six modernization priorities the Army will take on under its new Futures Command. The command is set up to tackle the materiel requirements to modernize the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat advanced teaming concept is just a deeper interoperability between the air and the ground, UAS that can do the dangerous work, that can do the dirty work,\u201d Rugen said, \u201calso do the dull work.\u201d He added that UAS already do a lot of that dull work such as \u201cpersistent stare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDangerous\u201d for example, might be \u201csomething that can penetrate contested air space and target for long-range precision fires, provide that seed we need to flow through that where we can dominate a corridor or a window for a moment in time in a very contested environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unmanned systems would be there to conduct the dangerous breeches and help provide greater standoff for manned aircraft, but bringing weapons like Hellfire or its future replacement the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) closer in to the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gray Eagle is already armed with Hellfire missiles but the Army has been hesitant to arm other drones and does not have a requirement to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army, according to Rugen, thinks it will need a fleet of \u201cpurpose-built UAS,\u201d which means they will be created from conception with specific capabilities like electronic attack or other non-lethal effects or are designed specifically to function as a swarm whether it\u2019s to provide decoys or spoof the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also the ability to launch a UAS from a manned aircraft or another UAS platform is another thing the service is looking seriously at, he said. \u201cSo you have some of these smaller form factors that present really great capabilities, but they don\u2019t have the legs to get to the tactical edge,\u201d but a UAS launched from a manned platform extends its reach, Rugen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army anticipates having to fight at great distances across more contested environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another way of looking at the CFTs early plans for UAS, according to Rugen, is the Army wants these aircraft to be air-launched, UAS that are tactical in nature and other UAS with \u201cadvanced capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army envisions a tactical UAS for its Brigade Combat Teams and advanced UAS for its reconnaissance squadrons. UAS used for reconnaissance, security, target and aquisition (RSTA) capability now are very focused on using full-motion video, but Rugen said the focus in the future will be more focused on electronic warfare capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is engaged in prototype and demonstration for a Future Tactical UAS (FTUAS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense News broke the news a year ago of the Army\u2019s plans to proceed with a Next-Generation Tactical UAS Technology Demonstration, or NGTUAS-TD program, that will be modeled after how the service is flight testing prototypes for a manned future rotorcraft in a demonstration called the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2016\/04\/29\/first-future-vertical-lift-helicopters-will-be-medium-lift\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> Joint Multi-Role (JMR) program.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2017\/04\/28\/army-to-hold-flight-demo-to-develop-next-gen-unmanned-aircraft\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Army to hold flight demo to develop next-gen unmanned aircraft<\/a><\/i>]<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army definitely knows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2016\/04\/26\/army-wants-to-link-all-drones-on-the-battlefield\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">it does not want its UAS dependent on runways going forward like Shadow and Gray Eagle are today<\/a>. There\u2019s little doubt the Army will have to operate in places where it can\u2019t rely on protected runways, or runways at all. The service also wants flexible payloads and a more survivable platform in terms of durability and reliability than what exists today in the current systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the technical demonstration is just one piece to the CFT\u2019s approach to figuring out what its future UAS fleet will look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are looking at doing a technology demonstrator effort, but I will tell you the other thing is, I\u2019ve made trips around [the Pentagon] and the other services, we really need to understand what everybody in the joint force is doing and developing,\u201d Rugen said, in order to ensure there aren\u2019t duplications of effort and to see if there are opportunities to work together on UAS capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CFT is considering whether to form a working group that looks at UAS across the board \u201cthat just kind of looks at and makes sure we are not spending the same development dollars twice, three times or four times and do we spend it once and do we get solutions that we all want and need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also looking at a UAS \u201cmix analysis study\u201d that is bigger than aviation, which covers everyone from the intelligence, reconnaissance, Fires, ground and even network communities to make sure everyone\u2019s needs and wants are being met through the best possible and most efficient plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CFT isn\u2019t waiting for analyses to wrap up and much of the future procurement planning for UAS is being done in parallel so if the Army discovers a great or truly disruptive capability now, it can move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not waiting and if we see something we like that the Marine Corps is doing or that the Air Force is doing, we are going to ask them to see if we can partner,\u201d Rugen said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between manned helicopters and unmanned aircraft in the future will become more advanced and complex, according to Brig.
