{"id":33587,"date":"2019-07-11T19:57:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T19:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/07\/11\/lawmakers-question-probe-that-cleared-hyten-of-sex-assault-allegations\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:47:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:47:29","slug":"lawmakers-question-probe-that-cleared-hyten-of-sex-assault-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2019\/07\/11\/lawmakers-question-probe-that-cleared-hyten-of-sex-assault-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers question probe that cleared Hyten of sex assault allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Congress should be given the opportunity to hear directly from the woman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/07\/11\/navy-to-recommend-three-star-former-cyber-command-chief-to-be-its-top-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\">accused<\/a> the nominee for vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of sexual misconduct, a key senator told reporters Thursday, as other legislators suggested a delay in the nomination process is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confirmation for President Donald Trump\u2019s nominee, U.S. Strategic Command chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/04\/09\/heres-who-will-be-the-new-vice-chairman-of-the-joint-chiefs-of-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gen. John Hyten<\/a>, grew more complicated Wednesday following the disclosure that the Air Force launched an investigation into Hyten\u2019s conduct with a subordinate. While Hyten had been cleared, several Senate Armed Services Committee members were left with questions after military officials delivered a classified briefing on the probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think members of the committee deserve to hear from his accuser, though its up to her whether she wants to do it and whether she wants to do it in a closed meeting, an open meeting or if she wants to do it at all,\u201d said SASC member Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny time we have these allegations, I think the victim deserves her time to tell her story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duckworth\u2019s comments came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/sexual-assault-allegations-complicate-confirmation-of-trumps-nominee-for-militarys-no-2-officer\/2019\/07\/10\/5e2ea340-a31f-11e9-b7b4-95e30869bd15_story.html?utm_term=.420607cedcb3\" target=_blank>The Washington Post reported<\/a> that the accuser \u2014 an Army colonel with 28 years of service \u2014 was willing to testify under oath to Congress about her accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duckworth said the accuser, who she found to be \u201cvery believable,\u201d is a constituent and had reached out to her office. The woman served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was subsequently relieved of her duties while serving on Hyten\u2019s staff, according to The Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/08a297df36e947a7888fde64acebdec5\" target=_blank>told The Associated Press <\/a>that Hyten subjected her to a series of unwanted sexual advances by kissing, hugging and rubbing up against her in 2017 while she was one of his aides. She said that he tried to derail her military career after she rebuffed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After she came forward in April, Air Force investigators found insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Hyten or to recommend administrative actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/07\/11\/officer-accuses-air-force-general-of-sexual-misconduct\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19191818137436.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Officer accuses Air Force general of sexual misconduct<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A senior military officer has accused the Air Force general tapped to be the next vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of sexual misconduct, potentially jeopardizing his nomination. Members of Congress have raised questions about the allegations and the military investigation that found insufficient evidence to charge him.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>How do lawmakers feel?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SASC Chairman Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., said Thursday he was satisfied with the thoroughness of the probe and that he did not think it was necessary that he hear directly from Hyten\u2019s accuser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inhofe, an ally of the president, then suggested the new scrutiny was in part politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s keep in mind that people \u2014 for clearly partisan reasons \u2014 people want to inflict damage on Donald Trump as well as anybody else on the Republican side,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing new to that, and motivation is there. &#8230; It\u2019s driving a lot of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nearly all SASC members were briefed Wednesday by a Pentagon official about the investigation, several said they were left with questions. Inhofe, however, was satisfied but open to input from panel members about how to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe collectively felt &#8230; we needed to investigate to evaluate the accusations; we did that,\u201d Inhofe said, lauding Air Force investigators. \u201cI am satisfied with how thorough they were during this process, and we haven\u2019t had our follow-up meeting to see if anyone\u2019s going to request further activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if Hyten\u2019s confirmation would be delayed, Inhofe \u2015 who has pressed the White House for months to resolve the many vacancies in Pentagon leadership \u2015 said: \u201cI hope not. &#8230; We need to get things done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SASC members were granted access to the Air Force\u2019s investigative report, and several declined to comment to reporters Thursday because they were still evaluating its contents. Some senators on both sides of the aisle said Thursday they need more time either to read it or gather answers to their questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re still in the process of going through it,\u201d said the panel\u2019s top Democrat, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, Sen. Richard Blumenthal called the allegations \u201cserious and concerning\u201d and expressed openness to a delay in Hyten\u2019s confirmation. \u201cShe needs to be heard with respect,\u201d Blumenthal, D-Conn., said of Hyten\u2019s accuser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere certainly needs to be full, fair consideration of these serious, concerning allegations, and the timing will depend on how we can resolve the outstanding questions and talk among ourselves about a way forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from the allegations themselves, Duckworth questioned whether the Department of Defense provided Hyten with preferential treatment, as he wasn\u2019t suspended during the investigation and the probe was conducted by Gen. Mike Holmes, the four-star chief of Air Combat Command, who is technically junior to Hyten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a couple of things where Gen. On Thursday, she said during a hallway interview that she has questions, but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s important all the members review the report that\u2019s there, we have access [to] that, to be able to continue to ask questions,\u201d Fischer said. \u201cBut it\u2019s important to have the facts and not go in with any prejudgements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he wants to ensure that Hyten was treated fairly and \u201cthat we investigate to the deepest depths that we can go, to make sure we know exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were a couple of loose issues that I didn\u2019t have comfort with that I\u2019m going to meet with them privately to find out their intent,\u201d Manchin said of investigators. \u201cFor me personally, I have to get a couple of clarifications before I feel comfortable voting [on Hyten\u2019s confirmation].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>The Associated Press contributed to this report.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gen.
